Real confirm Navas signing
Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas, one of the stars of this year’s World Cup, has completed his move to Real Madrid from Levante, the European champions announced on Sunday evening. “Real Madrid CF and Levante UD have reached an agreement for the transfer of Keylor Navas, who will be contracted to the club for the next six years,” a statement on Real Madrid’s Web site read. The Spanish capital club added that Navas, 27, is to be presented at their Santiago Bernabeu stadium this afternoon after undergoing a medical. Sports daily Marca reported that the club have paid the 10 million euro (US$13.4 million) release clause in Navas’ contract. Navas, who has spent the past two seasons in La Liga with Levante, was outstanding during unfancied Costa Rica’s run to the World Cup quarter-finals. He is to compete with Iker Casillas for the goalkeeper’s jersey in Carlo Ancelotti’s side, with Diego Lopez expected to leave the club.

Beaumelle quits Zambia
Patrice Beaumelle quit as Zambia’s coach on Sunday and is expected to team up with French compatriot and new Ivory Coast boss Herve Renard. Zambian soccer supremo Kalusha Bwalya confirmed the resignation of Beaumelle, adding that the Frenchman was planning to work with Renard again. “Patrice wants to work with Herve and there is nothing we can do,” the 1988 African Footballer of the Year said. “When you are a head coach, there is too much pressure, unlike when you are an assistant.” Renard and Beaumelle plotted the shock 2012 Africa Cup of Nations final triumph of Zambia over Ivory Coast after a penalty shootout. Beaumelle was promoted to Chipolopolo head coach when Renard left Zambia last year for French Ligue 1 outfit Sochaux. However, having failed to save the club from relegation, Renard succeeded Sabri Lamouchi as coach of the Ivorian “Elephants” three days ago. Former France midfielder Lamouchi resigned when Ivory Coast were eliminated from the World Cup in Brazil after the first round.

Hutarovich wins stage 1
Belarussian champion Yauheni Hutarovich won the first stage of the Tour of Poland after 226km from Gdansk to Bydgoszcz on Sunday in a sprint finish. The AG2R rider edged out Russian Roman Maikin and Italy’s Manuele Mori in the dash to the line. Favorites including Poland’s Rafal Majka, Dutchman Pieter Weening and Frenchman Warren Barguil finished safely in the pack. A five-man breakaway had enjoyed a large lead over the peloton, but they were held up by a hailstorm with about 50km left. Fallen branches in the road also caused crashes in the main bunch as the chase briefly stalled. Pole Maciej Paterski broke clear of his escape companions when all four others went down on a slippery corner. Although two managed to catch the 27-year-old, he attacked again and led until about 1km to go, when the peloton reeled him in. Thereafter, it was set up for a bunch sprint and Hutarovich proved the strongest.

The pressure was already on Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso before their 2-1 defeat to Manchester City on Wednesday in the UEFA Champions League raised further questions about his future. Arsenal remain perfect in this season’s competition and three points clear at the top of the standings after a 3-0 win against Club Brugge, while defending champions Paris Saint-Germain were held 0-0 at Athletic Bilbao. The clash between Madrid and City was the standout game of the round amid reports this week that Alonso had lost control of the locker room. Speculation over his position is likely to intensify after the latest
