Chelsea defender Gary Cahill admits his side’s crunch clash with Manchester City on Monday will be the ultimate test of their Premier League title credentials.
City swept to the top of the table with a 5-1 demolition of Tottenham Hotspur in midweek, while Chelsea lost ground in the title race after being held to a frustrating goalless draw at home to West Ham United.
Jose Mourinho’s third-placed team trail leaders City by three points and a defeat at the Etihad Stadium would be a major blow to Chelsea’s hopes of winning the English crown for the first time since 2009-2010.
Mourinho accused West Ham of playing “football from the 19th century” after the east Londoners settled for a cautious approach in midweek, but City’s dazzling array of attacking talent may force the Chelsea boss to adopt a conservative game-plan himself.
The Blues have already beaten Manuel Pellegrini’s side this season when a Joe Hart error allowed Fernando Torres to a score a late winner at Stamford Bridge in October last year, but City have been in majestic form since then and their five-star display at White Hart Lane extended their unbeaten run to 20 matches in all competitions.
Pellegrini’s men have scored a remarkable 115 goals this season and they have been invincible at the Etihad, crushing all opposition to record a 100 percent record of 11 wins on home turf in the Premier League.
Even the country’s best teams have been embarrassed at the Etihad, with Manchester United conceding four, while Arsenal and Tottenham were both hit for six.
England international Cahill acknowledges Chelsea, who will move level on points with City if they win, will have to produce their very best to emerge undefeated.
“They’re banging goals in left, right and center. It’s going to be really tough,” Cahill said. “We had a really good result against them at our place, but at home they’ve been so strong. I suppose it’s the ultimate test. It’s going to be a really, really tough game.”
If City striker Sergio Aguero fails to recover from a hamstring injury, Pellegrini will choose between Alvaro Negredo or Stevan Jovetic as his replacement.
Jovetic replaced Aguero at Spurs and notched his first Premier League goal since his £22 million (US$36 million) transfer from ACF Fiorentina last year.
The Montenegro international forward, who is finally fit after battling injury and illness, warned his teammates to guard against over-inflated expectations after a host of pundits this week labeled them champions-elect.
“We were really happy after beating Tottenham, but we need to stay calm because nothing is finished,” Jovetic said.
Second-placed Arsenal, who host Crystal Palace tomorrow, cannot afford another slip after falling one point behind City following a 2-2 draw at Southampton.
With City and Chelsea not playing until Monday, the Gunners would temporarily regain first place if they beat Palace.
“We have to look at ourselves and only think we have to move forward,” Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said. “The kind of performance we delivered at Southampton will not move us forward, so let’s focus to come back on Sunday and produce a good performance.”
Manchester United travel to Stoke City looking to close the gap on fourth-placed Liverpool in the race to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
Newcastle United host Sunderland in the highly-charged Tyne-Wear derby, while fourth-placed Liverpool travel to West Bromwich Albion aiming to build on their 4-0 thrashing of Merseyside rivals Everton.

The reigning NBA champions looked to be heading for a third straight loss after the Jazz inched into a 114-112 lead following Lauri Markkanen’s layup with just three seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. However, NBA Most Valuable Player Gilgeous-Alexander drained a superb 13-foot jump shot to tie it up at 114-114 as the buzzer sounded to send the game into overtime. Gilgeous-Alexander then took over in the extra period with nine points as the Western

AUSTRALIAN ADVENTURE: Sabalenka aims to follow up with a third Australian Open win, while Taiwanese Joanna Garland claimed a WTA 125 title in Canberra Aryna Sabalenka beat Karolina Muchova in straight sets to reach her third Brisbane International final in a row yesterday, a week ahead of the Australian Open. Sabalenka looked in great touch against the tricky Czech, who had won their last three meetings and went into the match as one of the few players with a winning record over the world No. 1. However, Sabalenka showed her class and power as she broke Muchova once in each set to take the semi-final 6-3, 6-4 in 89 minutes to face Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk in the final. “I struggled against her a couple of times [in
His team were knocked out of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in agonizing fashion on Tuesday, but the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s (DR Congo) human statue Michel Kuka Mboladinga would be remembered as the tournament’s most remarkable supporter. The colorfully dressed Kuka has earned fame as the fan who stands completely immobile throughout his team’s games, looking toward the sky with his right arm raised and palm open. He has become a media star and on Tuesday was accompanied by a delegation of several hundred Congolese supporters whose trip to Morocco was paid for by the country’s government. They took their
