Sergio Aguero marked his comeback with a goal as Manchester City swept past second-tier Blackburn Rovers with an emphatic 5-0 victory in their FA Cup third-round replay on Wednesday.
Held 1-1 at Ewood Park in the initial tie, City took control of the replay at a rain-soaked Etihad Stadium thanks to a brace of goals either side of halftime from Alvaro Negredo.
Edin Dzeko added a third, before Aguero scored only 50 seconds after his introduction as a 72nd-minute substitute, following a month on the sidelines with a calf injury.
Dzeko brought up City’s 99th goal in all competitions this season to make it 5-0, leaving Blackburn’s Championship counterparts Watford with plenty of food for thought ahead of their trip to the Etihad in the fourth round.
“It’s an important amount of goals,” City manager Manuel Pellegrini said. “When I arrived here, it was important to try and win a trophy, but in the way this team must play, and it’s important for the fans to come here and know that we are going to try and score the most amount of goals we can.”
Pellegrini said that he was happy to be spoiled for choice by his three in-form strikers.
“For me that’s not a problem,” the Chilean said. “It’s a problem when you don’t have the players to choose.”
Pellegrini made eight changes to the team that won 2-0 at Newcastle United on Sunday and his new-look side initially struggled to make inroads.
Dzeko snatched at a handful of early chances and a free-kick within shooting distance offered Blackburn an opportunity to strike at the other end, only for Ben Marshall to curl his shot straight at Costel Pantilimon.
Belatedly, City began to muster more of a threat, with Javi Garcia forcing Blackburn goalkeeper Paul Robinson into a sprawling save from long range and Jesus Navas bending an inviting cross across goal.
Blackburn had largely succeeded in keeping their opponents at arm’s length, but with the respite of the halftime interval within touching distance, City struck.
Navas’ pass found the overlapping Fernandinho and the Brazilian’s whipped cross enabled Negredo to claim his 20th goal of the season with a firm downward header.
Pellegrini introduced Aleksandar Kolarov for Fernandinho at halftime and the first thing the Serbian did was create City’s second goal with a superb searching pass from halfway that Negredo lifted past Robinson.
The timing of Negredo’s second goal was every bit as cruel as his first, but Blackburn briefly threatened to make a game of it.
Joshua King headed over and then forced Pantilimon into a smart low save at his near post, before Jason Lowe shot narrowly wide.
However, the flurry passed, and Dzeko made the game safe in the 67th minute when he swept a shot high into the net at the near post from Navas’ low cross.
Aguero came on for Negredo and needed only two touches to make his mark, trapping a lay-off from Dzeko and swiveling before planting a low shot in the bottom-right corner with his left foot.
Dzeko added a fifth with 11 minutes remaining, finishing at the near post after the irrepressible Navas drove yet another excellent cross into the box from the right.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has overturned French Olympic fencer Ysaora Thibus’ four-year suspension for doping, ruling that her positive test for a banned substance was caused by kissing her then-boyfriend, American fencer Race Imboden. Thibus, a silver medalist in team foil at the Tokyo Games, had tested positive for ostarine, a prohibited muscle-building substance, during a competition in Paris in January last year. However, CAS concluded there was no intentional wrongdoing, finding it scientifically plausible that repeated kissing over several days with Olympic medalist Imboden — who was taking ostarine at the time — led to accidental contamination. Switzerland’s Riola Xhemaili on Thursday scored a last-gasp goal to salvage a dramatic 1-1 draw with Finland that sent the joyous hosts through to the quarter-finals at Euro 2025, and heartbroken Finland home. Switzerland, who needed only a draw to advance based on goal-difference, finished second in Group A behind Norway to go through to the knockout round for the first time and are to face the winners of Group B, which would be world champions Spain as things stand. “I think we set ourselves a goal on the pitch, to write history, to go into the knockout stages, which we’ve never
