Real Madrid took a huge step toward the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey with a 2-0 win over CA Osasuna in the first leg of their round-of-16 tie on Thursday.
Karim Benzema got the hosts off to the perfect start when he headed in Luka Modric’s cross after 19 minutes.
Jese Rodriguez then gave Madrid breathing space in the tie when he chipped home Cristiano Ronaldo’s pass after halftime and Madrid were only denied a third in comic circumstances moments later when Ronaldo deflected Gareth Bale’s goalbound effort behind.

“Winning 2-0 is a good result. We tried to score the third and we were very close on a few occasions,” Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said. “The game in Osasuna will not be easy, but it is a good result going forward.”
Ancelotti named a strong side, with Bale returning to the starting lineup for the first time in four games following a calf injury.
Despite failing to find the net, the Welshman showed flashes of his best form in the second half and Ancelotti is confident he will go from strength to strength having completed the 90 minutes.
“Bale played very well and was very dangerous,” he said. “Everyone knows he had injury problems and he is a player that needs to be in optimal condition. For that reason he played the whole game. In the second half the game was more open and it suited him more, but we are all very happy with him.”
Jese was also given a rare chance from the start and thought he had won his side a penalty on 16 minutes when he went down under a challenge from Osasuna goalkeeper Asier Riesgo.
However, after originally pointing to the penalty spot, referee Jesus Perez Montero reversed his decision and harshly booked Jese for diving.
Minutes later Madrid were in front as Benzema flicked home Modric’s free-kick to register his 99th goal for the club.
Ronaldo passed up a great chance to double the advantage when he fired straight at Riesgo after a lovely scooped pass from Bale as Madrid began the second half with more purpose than they ended the first.
The hosts then took advantage of some woeful Osasuna defending to make it 2-0 just before the hour mark when Benzema and Ronaldo combined to tee up Jese, who lofted the ball over Riesgo.
That was to be the Spain international’s last major involvement as he pulled up injured shortly afterwards and was replaced by Isco.
Bale should then have had his first goal since November as his goalbound shot from Benzema’s cut-back was deflected behind by Ronaldo, but despite failing to add to their tally, Madrid will be strong favorites to set up a quarter-final meeting with either AD Alcorcon or RCD Espanyol when they travel to Pamplona for the second leg on Wednesday.
In other Copa del Ray games on Thursday, Rayo Vallecano de Madrid drew 0-0 at home to Valencia-based Levante UD, while Real Sociedad were held to a 0-0 stalemate at the Estadio Anoeta in San Sebastian by Villarreal.
A stunning Lamine Yamal strike on Thursday helped crown Barcelona La Liga champions with a 2-0 win over local rivals RCD Espanyol, with victory ensuring Real Madrid cannot catch them at the top of the table. Yamal’s effort and Fermin Lopez’s goal took Hansi Flick’s side seven points clear of Los Blancos with two matches remaining, to clinch Barcelona’s 28th title and complete a superb domestic treble. Only the UEFA Champions League title escaped an exciting young Barca side this season, as they won the league for the second time in six years, at Espanyol’s ground again just as in 2022-2023. Jannik Sinner on Thursday marched into the semi-finals of the Italian Open after destroying Casper Ruud in straight sets 6-0, 6-1, while Coco Gauff won a marathon three-set battle with China’s Zheng Qinwen to advance to the women’s singles final. American Gauff is to face Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in today’s title match after pulling through 7-6 (7/3), 4-6, 7-6 (7/4) in a match that lasted over three-and-a-half hours. Ruud was supposed to be Sinner’s toughest test in Rome since he came back from his three-month doping ban, as the Norwegian came into the match in hot form on clay after winning in
Shohei Ohtani on Thursday delivered his first two-homer game of the season and had six RBIs as the Los Angeles Dodgers poured it on with five long balls in a 19-2 victory over the visiting Athletics. Max Muncy, Andy Pages and James Outman also hit home runs for the Dodgers, who left no doubt by taking a 13-2 lead following a seven-run third inning. Muncy and Kim Hye-seong each had three hits for Los Angeles. Dodgers right-hander Matt Sauer led off a bullpen game by allowing two runs in four innings. Left-hander Justin Wrobleski (1-1) finished with four scoreless innings after he
Taiwanese-American right fielder Corbin Carroll on Tuesday hit his third home run in two days to tie for the MLB lead with 14 homers. Carroll on Monday hit two homers for the Arizona Diamondbacks in their 2-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants to put him with in one of the hit leaders. Although the Giants got their revenge on Tuesday night, beating Arizona 10-6, Carroll hit a solo home run in the seventh inning to tie him with the Philadelphia Phillies’ Kyle Schwarber and the New York Yankees’ Aaron Judge for the most homers so far this year.
