Pakistan were staring defeat in the face in the second Test after South Africa out-batted them and then bowled well on the third day in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, yesterday,
However, South Africa’s bid for victory, and keeping their seven-year unbeaten away series record, was tainted when they were docked five penalty runs by the umpires after television replays showed Faf du Plessis apparently trying to tamper with the ball in Pakistan’s 31st over.
The two umpires, Rod Tucker of Australia and Ian Gould of England, called South Africa captain Graeme Smith for a warning, changed the ball and added five penalty runs to Pakistan’s total.

Under International Cricket Council rules, if the umpires lay charges against any player, match referee David Boon will summon the player.
However, even that setback for the Proteas could not save Pakistan as they continued to slump after finding themselves on 2-2 at lunch.
South Africa, seeking a series-leveling win, once again rocked Pakistan’s top order with three early wickets after compiling a mammoth 517 in their first innings for a big 418-run lead.
At the close, Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq (42) and Asad Shafiq (28) were at the crease, but they still need 286 runs to avoid an innings defeat and they have to bat out two days to force a draw.
The duo have added 62 for the fifth wicket and would need a Herculean effort to avoid defeat.
Dale Steyn gave South Africa an ideal start when he removed Shan Masood with the fourth ball of the innings, having him trapped in front of the wicket with a sharp delivery for a duck.
It became 2-2 when Khurram Manzoor fell for his second duck of the match, caught off a miscued drive off Vernon Philander from the fifth ball of the second over.
Manzoor had made 146 in Pakistan’s seven-wicket win in last week’s Abu Dhabi Test.
Azhar Ali and Younis added 46 for the third wicket, before part-time spinner Jean-Paul Duminy struck with his first ball, trapping Ali leg before with a low delivery for 19.
DROPPED CATCH
Duminy could have taken Younis on 28, but Kallis failed to hold a low catch in the slips.
Younis was finally bowled for 38 by leg-spinner Imran Tahir, who took a career-best 5-32 to dismiss Pakistan for a paltry 99 in the first innings.
In the morning session, South Africa lost their last six wickets for the addition of 57 runs after resuming at 460-4. Off-spinner Saeed Ajmal finished with 5-161, while paceman Mohammad Irfan took 3-102.
De Villiers (164) was the first man to go, caught behind off Irfan in the fifth over of the day.
He hit 17 fours and a six during a commanding 376-minute innings and completed an all-time South African fifth-wicket record partnership of 338 with Smith.
SUPERB KNOCK
Smith was finally caught in the slips by Younis off Ajmal.
Smith’s superb knock lasted 10 hours, 32 minutes during which he dominated Pakistan’s bowling, hitting 16 fours off 388 balls.
With Smith’s catch, Younis beat Javed Miandad’s record of most Test catches of 93. It took him 86 Tests, 38 fewer than his illustrious countryman.
Irfan removed Duminy for 7, before he was forced out of attack by Australian umpire Rod Tucker for running into the danger zone after a second warning.
Ajmal then wrapped up the innings with the last three wickets to complete his ninth five-wicket haul in Tests.
‘AWFUL PERFORMANCE’: Golden State were always chasing the game after failing to threaten from long range, making just eight of 33 three-point attempts Aaron Gordon on Monday scored 38 points as the Denver Nuggets shrugged off the absence of Nikola Jokic to halt the Golden State Warriors’ seven-game winning streak with a 114-105 victory over their Western Conference rivals. A dazzling display from Gordon inspired what was ultimately a comfortable win for Denver, who were missing regular starters Jokic and Jamal Murray from their lineup. The absentees were barely felt by Denver, who startled the Warriors early at San Francisco’s Chase Center and led for most of the game. The Warriors threatened to stage a late rally after slashing the Nuggets’ fourth-quarter lead from 15 points
Barcelona’s Ferran Torres scored twice on Sunday to help secure a late 4-2 comeback win at Atletico Madrid in a pulsating La Liga clash that took the Catalan side back to the top of the table. Barca have 60 points and a game in hand after last week’s postponement of their home game with CA Osasuna. They are level on points with Real Madrid, who won 2-1 at Villarreal on Saturday. “I am happy and proud of this team,” Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick told a news conference. “They never give up... It’s a great three points and we are happy to
Chris Wood has fired Nottingham Forest into surprise UEFA Champions League contention and now the striker wants to score the goals to help New Zealand make history at the FIFA World Cup. New Zealand are strong favorites to qualify out of the Oceania region over the next week and reach the World Cup for only the third time. At the country’s two previous appearances at the finals, in 1982 and 2010, they have failed to win a match in six attempts. With Wood captaining the side and leading from the front, he told local media yesterday that the current squad can finally deliver
Paolo Banchero on Sunday scored 24 points as the Orlando Magic overturned a 13-point deficit to end the Cleveland Cavaliers’ 16-game unbeaten streak with a gutsy 108-103 road victory. Cleveland, the runaway Eastern Conference leaders, had looked poised to extend their franchise-record winning run after surging clear of Orlando early in the third quarter, but after a season where they have staged hefty winning comebacks of their own, the tables turned on Cleveland in the face of a furious burst of Orlando scoring. The Magic outscored Cleveland 35-23 in the third quarter, with Franz Wagner leading the charge with nine points and
