Philippine boxing hero Manny Pacquiao says he is furiously training like a 20-year-old to break a losing streak and re-establish his reputation as one of the world’s best fighters.
Pacquiao also said his match against US boxer Brandon Rios in the Chinese territory of Macau next month would be “a good window” to promote boxing in China and that he felt honored to take part in the landmark bout.
“This training camp, I believe, is one of the longest preparations in my boxing career. I trained early because I want to prove that I can still fight in the top [tier] of boxing,” he told reporters late on Wednesday in his home town of General Santos in the southern Philippines.
“This time my preparation is more serious, more focused. My mind is like when I was 20 years old,” Pacquiao said.
A former champion in an unprecedented eight weight divisions, Pacquiao, who turns 35 in December, is seeking to come back from two consecutive defeats which have led supporters to question if he should hang up his gloves.
He lost a controversial split decision to the US’ Timothy Bradley in June last year, then suffered a sixth-round knockout to Mexican archrival Juan Manuel Marquez six months later.
SHOCK DEFEAT
Pacquiao said he had come to terms with his shock defeat to Marquez, reasoning that losing was inevitable during a long sporting career.
“I don’t think I had a mistake in that fight. If you look back ... I had 100 percent conditioning, aggressiveness. That [defeat] is part of boxing. I accept 100 percent what happened in the last fight,” he said.
While he had done light training earlier, Pacquiao formally opened his training camp in General Santos last month.
His training to meet Rios, for the vacant World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title, has largely been behind closed doors.
This is in contrast to many of his previous training camps, where journalists, celebrities and other guests have dropped by to pose with the boxer.
QUESTIONS
Critics have previously questioned whether Pacquiao’s diminishing prowess in the ring was because he had become distracted by his many other endeavors.
His boxing fame helped him to launch a successful political career in the Philippines and he is now a second-term congressman with ambitions of eventually becoming president.
Pacquiao, who through the peak of his career fought almost exclusively in the US, appeared excited at the prospect of raising the sport’s profile in the world’s most populous nation.
“This is a good window for the people of China to have the opportunity to watch the big fight live. This is also a good window to promote boxing in China,” he said.
‘AWFUL PERFORMANCE’: Golden State were always chasing the game after failing to threaten from long range, making just eight of 33 three-point attempts Aaron Gordon on Monday scored 38 points as the Denver Nuggets shrugged off the absence of Nikola Jokic to halt the Golden State Warriors’ seven-game winning streak with a 114-105 victory over their Western Conference rivals. A dazzling display from Gordon inspired what was ultimately a comfortable win for Denver, who were missing regular starters Jokic and Jamal Murray from their lineup. The absentees were barely felt by Denver, who startled the Warriors early at San Francisco’s Chase Center and led for most of the game. The Warriors threatened to stage a late rally after slashing the Nuggets’ fourth-quarter lead from 15 points
Barcelona’s Ferran Torres scored twice on Sunday to help secure a late 4-2 comeback win at Atletico Madrid in a pulsating La Liga clash that took the Catalan side back to the top of the table. Barca have 60 points and a game in hand after last week’s postponement of their home game with CA Osasuna. They are level on points with Real Madrid, who won 2-1 at Villarreal on Saturday. “I am happy and proud of this team,” Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick told a news conference. “They never give up... It’s a great three points and we are happy to
Chris Wood has fired Nottingham Forest into surprise UEFA Champions League contention and now the striker wants to score the goals to help New Zealand make history at the FIFA World Cup. New Zealand are strong favorites to qualify out of the Oceania region over the next week and reach the World Cup for only the third time. At the country’s two previous appearances at the finals, in 1982 and 2010, they have failed to win a match in six attempts. With Wood captaining the side and leading from the front, he told local media yesterday that the current squad can finally deliver
Paolo Banchero on Sunday scored 24 points as the Orlando Magic overturned a 13-point deficit to end the Cleveland Cavaliers’ 16-game unbeaten streak with a gutsy 108-103 road victory. Cleveland, the runaway Eastern Conference leaders, had looked poised to extend their franchise-record winning run after surging clear of Orlando early in the third quarter, but after a season where they have staged hefty winning comebacks of their own, the tables turned on Cleveland in the face of a furious burst of Orlando scoring. The Magic outscored Cleveland 35-23 in the third quarter, with Franz Wagner leading the charge with nine points and
