The Control Yuan helped in the collection of about NT$220 million (US$7.42 million) in back taxes owed by pigeon racing operators, the government’s top supervisory agency said yesterday.
A popular gambling activity, wagers can reach million of New Taiwan dollars per pigeon race, but the government was losing out on taxes from unregistered races until the Control Yuan stepped in, according to members Teresa J.C. Yin and Ma Shiow-ru.
After the agency urged action, police made 77 raids, discovering about NT$150 million of unreported earnings from the races, the Control Yuan said.

Tax authorities then recovered more than NT$60 million that should have been paid in taxes, along with additional fines worth more than NT$160 million.
Only one out of 108 pigeon racing clubs listed by the Council of Agriculture was legally registered, the Control Yuan added..
Eighteen clubs are currently applying for registration, while another four have already been established legally since the problem was brought to the attention of authorities, the agency said.
