Tillakaratne Dilshan smashed an unbeaten 74 off 51 balls as Sri Lanka defeated South Africa by six wickets in the final Twenty20 game on Tuesday to retain their No. 1 ranking in the short format.
The hosts, already down 0-2 in the series, launched a spirited chase of South Africa’s challenging 163-3 to win the day-night game in Hambantota with 11 balls to spare.
South Africa won the series 2-1, making amends for the 1-4 defeat in the preceding one-dayers on the tour.

However, Tuesday’s victory was crucial for Sri Lanka, who would have slipped to No. 3 in the Twenty20 rankings behind Pakistan and South Africa had they been whitewashed 3-0.
Dilshan brought up the thrilling win off the first ball of the 19th over, lofting Morne Morkel for his second six. He also hit nine boundaries.
Former captain Mahela Jayawardene hit a quickfire 33 in an opening stand of 67 off 35 balls with Dilshan to help Sri Lanka make a rollicking start.

The hosts were 123-4 in the 16th over when Thisara Perera (25 not out) put on a match-winning stand of 41 with Dilshan for the fifth wicket.
With 27 runs needed off the final 18 balls, the big-hitting Perera took 21 runs from the 18th over bowled by Wayne Parnell, including three fours and a six, to ease the pressure.
“It was not an easy target to chase, but the start I got with Mahela helped,” said Dilshan, who was named man of the match. “After that, I knew we could pass that total. It was important not to panic, but Thisara made the job easier. We may have lost the series, but it feels good to win this game.”
South African captain Faf du Plessis said the series win will boost his team ahead of next year’s World Twenty20 in Bangladesh.
“It’s a big trophy to take back on the plane,” he said.
“We are really happy to win the series against the best team in the world. I thought 163 was enough, but one has to give credit to Dilshan,” Du Plessis said. “This series was a good experience for the boys because the conditions in Bangladesh will not be much different from here.”
The hosts rested their two main players, batsman Kumar Sangakkara and fast bowler Lasith Malinga, and recalled Dilshan and Suranga Lakmal.
Earlier, Du Plessis hit 85 off 65 balls and J.P. Duminy remained unbeaten on a 34-ball 51 as South Africa too put on a thrilling exhibition of power hitting.
Du Plessis, who won the toss for the third time in a row and elected to bat, smashed 10 boundaries and three sixes during a third-wicket stand of 112 with Duminy.
The South African skipper and Duminy put on their century stand after opener Henry Davids had been dismissed off the first ball of the match, leg-before to seamer Nuwan Kulasekara.
Duminy hit his 100th six in Twenty20 internationals when he lofted Kulasekara over the mid-wicket fence in the 17th over.
Du Plessis was dismissed in the final over, bowled by Lakmal.
Brazil has four teams, more than any other country, in the expanded Club World Cup that kicked off yesterday in the US, but for SE Palmeiras, the competition holds a special meaning: winning it would provide some redemption. Under coach Abel Ferreira since 2020, Palmeiras lifted two Copa Libertadores titles, plus Brazilian league, cup and state championships. Even before Ferreira, it boasted another South American crown and 11 league titles. The only major trophy missing is a world champions’ title. Other Brazilian clubs like Fluminense FC and Botafogo FR, also in the tournament, have never won it either, but the problem for Palmeiras
Lionel Messi drew vast crowds and showed flashes of his brilliance when his Inter Miami side were held to a goalless draw by African giants Al-Ahly as the revamped FIFA Club World Cup got off to a festive start on Saturday. Fans showed up en masse for the Group A clash at the Hard Rock Stadium, home to the NFL’s Miami Dolphins, but Messi could not fully deliver, his best chance coming through a last-second attempt that was deflected onto the crossbar. Inter Miami next face FC Porto on Thursday in Atlanta, while Al-Ahly, who benefited from raucous, massive support, are to
Sergio Ramos on Tuesday outfoxed two Inter players and artfully headed home the first goal for Monterrey at the FIFA Club World Cup. The 39-year-old Ramos slipped through the penalty area for the score just as he did for so many years in the shirts of Real Madrid and Spain’s national team, with whom he combined smarts, timing and physicality. Ramos’ clever goal and his overall defensive play at the Rose Bowl were major factors in Monterrey’s impressive 1-1 draw against the UEFA Champions League finalists in the clubs’ first match of the tournament. “There is always a joy to contribute to the
Los Angeles Dodgers two-way star Shohei Ohtani on Monday wobbled through a 28-pitch first inning at home against the San Diego Padres in his first appearance on the mound since August 2023. Scheduled to throw as many as two innings, Ohtani went a single frame while allowing one run on two hits. He did not issue a walk nor strike out a batter. “Not quite happy with the results overall, but the takeaway for me is that I feel good enough to be able to make the next outing,” Ohtani said of his pitching performance. Ohtani still wound up with a positive impact
