Tottenham Hotspur have opened new contract talks with their midfielder Gareth Bale and are confident of keeping the Wales international despite him being linked with a move to Real Madrid on an almost daily basis, manager Andre Villas-Boas said yesterday.
“He signed a new contract last year, but talks have started between the chairman and his agent and are ongoing,” Villas-Boas told the media in Hong Kong where Spurs are playing in the Premier League Asian Trophy pre-season competition.
“It doesn’t mean there is going to be an agreement, but we are confident,” he said. “The player is under contract. He signed a new contract last year, he is a special player, had a wonderful season last year and at the moment we are extremely happy with him.”

“We are speaking with his agent about a possible improvement, but we don’t need to comment further on any transfer speculation or his contract,” Villas-Boas said.
Bale, 24, signed a four-year deal last year and had an outstanding season although Spurs missed out on a Champions League place by one point.
According to non-stop and frenzied reporting in Spain and England since the season ended, Real Madrid are leading the chase for the player. Marca newspaper said Real were preparing to offer Spurs what would be a world-record fee of £85 million (US$130.16 million) for him.
However, it has also been widely reported that Bale, who became a father for the first time last year, is settled at Spurs and has no plans to leave the London club.
Bale is with the squad in Hong Kong, but will not play in today’s match against South China because he is recovering from a strained gluteus muscle.
Villas-Boas, speaking in a Hong Kong hotel, also confirmed that Belgian international defender Jan Vertonghen would be out for two to three weeks after damaging ankle ligaments on the wet playing surface during Spurs’ opening game against Sunderland on Tuesday.
Vertonghen lost his footing during Spurs’ 3-1 defeat and is now in danger of missing the start of the season. Spurs begin their campaign away to Crystal Palace on Aug. 18.
Heavy rain was forecast for Hong Kong for the remainder of yesterday and before today’s match, and Villas-Boas said he would prefer not to have to play the game.
“The conditions are extremely poor, but there is nothing we can do about it. We’ve lost one player through injury — and if I can be sincere I would prefer not to go ahead [with today’s game] but that’s the reality,” he said.
“Its our responsibility and if the authorities decide to go ahead, we will play the game,” he said.
SSC Napoli will have to wait one more week to seal the Serie A title after on Sunday being held to a goalless draw at Parma, while closest rivals Inter drew 2-2 in a dramatic game with SS Lazio. Antonio Conte’s team stayed one point ahead of Inter and were unfortunate not to win after twice striking the woodwork through Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa and Matteo Politano, while Scott McTominay also had a free-kick tipped onto the crossbar. The away side thought they would be handed a chance to take the points from the penalty spot in the 96th minute when David Neres
A stunning Lamine Yamal strike on Thursday helped crown Barcelona La Liga champions with a 2-0 win over local rivals RCD Espanyol, with victory ensuring Real Madrid cannot catch them at the top of the table. Yamal’s effort and Fermin Lopez’s goal took Hansi Flick’s side seven points clear of Los Blancos with two matches remaining, to clinch Barcelona’s 28th title and complete a superb domestic treble. Only the UEFA Champions League title escaped an exciting young Barca side this season, as they won the league for the second time in six years, at Espanyol’s ground again just as in 2022-2023. Back then,
Jannik Sinner on Thursday marched into the semi-finals of the Italian Open after destroying Casper Ruud in straight sets 6-0, 6-1, while Coco Gauff won a marathon three-set battle with China’s Zheng Qinwen to advance to the women’s singles final. American Gauff is to face Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in today’s title match after pulling through 7-6 (7/3), 4-6, 7-6 (7/4) in a match that lasted over three-and-a-half hours. Ruud was supposed to be Sinner’s toughest test in Rome since he came back from his three-month doping ban, as the Norwegian came into the match in hot form on clay after winning in
Shohei Ohtani on Thursday delivered his first two-homer game of the season and had six RBIs as the Los Angeles Dodgers poured it on with five long balls in a 19-2 victory over the visiting Athletics. Max Muncy, Andy Pages and James Outman also hit home runs for the Dodgers, who left no doubt by taking a 13-2 lead following a seven-run third inning. Muncy and Kim Hye-seong each had three hits for Los Angeles. Dodgers right-hander Matt Sauer led off a bullpen game by allowing two runs in four innings. Left-hander Justin Wrobleski (1-1) finished with four scoreless innings after he
