Steven Gerrard’s penalty sealed a second-half turnaround by Liverpool in a 2-1 win over relegation-threatened Aston Villa on Sunday, boosting his team’s hopes of playing in Europe next season.
Villa, who are third from bottom with seven games to play, took a halftime lead thanks to Belgium international striker Christian Benteke’s 14th goal of the campaign, but Jordan Henderson started Liverpool’s comeback with an equalizer in the 47th minute.
Luis Suarez then tumbled in the area under a challenge from Nathan Baker 13 minutes later and Gerrard converted the spot-kick into the bottom corner to keep Liverpool five points behind fifth-placed Arsenal, who occupy the final European position.

The Reds will require an almost perfect end to the season and for a few of the teams above them to slip up to qualify for either the UEFA Champions League or Europa League next season.
“Sometimes you can let the season fizzle out, but we don’t want to do that,” said Gerrard, who needed an injection in his heel to make the starting lineup, before scoring his 98th Premier League goal. “We want to see if we can nick fifth or sixth in the table.”
The nature of the comeback showed once again that Liverpool, under Brendan Rodgers, are a team on the up after their slow start to the season. It was their fourth win in their past five league games.
“We upped the tempo after the break and we were excellent,” Rodgers said. “It is a terrific win for us. Our quality was there for all to see.”
Gerrard needed to produce a flying header to clear Benteke’s header off Liverpool’s line in the 65th minute to preserve the lead.
Rodgers hailed the 32-year-old England captain and said the club would be offering him a new contract.
“He is just a real inspirational man. A top, top player, whose hunger and desire for Liverpool to succeed is incredible,” Rodgers said. “I can’t speak highly enough of him. As a guy coming from the outside, who has watched him all my life, to actually work with the man is a huge pleasure and privilege. Can Gerrard play on into his late 30s? Absolutely, no question.”
The visitors had trouble in the first half coping with Benteke, who enhanced his reputation as one of the best pre-season signings by giving Liverpool’s defense a torrid time and capping it with a well-taken goal in the 31st minute.
Gabriel Agbonlahor cushioned a long ball over the top with his right thigh into the path of his strike partner, who volleyed low past Pepe Reina for his ninth goal in 11 league games.
Agbonlahor earlier had a great chance saved from point-blank range by Reina, but Liverpool were always dangerous at the other end, with goalkeeper Brad Guzan twice denying Suarez.
The cutting edge arrived immediately after the break, with Philippe Coutinho finding the sprinting Henderson with a defense-splitting pass and the midfielder finishing into the corner.
Coutinho has now scored or assisted in all six of his appearances since joining from Inter in January.
Liverpool were rampant over the next 15 minutes, Coutinho shooting wide when clean through and Glen Johnson hitting the post with a deflected shot, before Suarez was brought down by Baker’s clumsy sliding tackle.
Guzan dived the right way for Gerrard’s low penalty, but he could not keep it out.
“I was glad to get on the scoresheet with the penalty, but the header at the other end probably won us the game,” Gerrard said.
Wigan Athletic’s 1-0 victory over Norwich City on Saturday dropped Villa into the relegation zone on goal-difference.
“We are playing well enough to win and I certainly have the belief that we will be fine,” Villa manager Paul Lambert said. “We had chances and we didn’t look like a team down there at the bottom.”
HSIEH ADVANCES: In the women’s doubles, Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-wei was to play in the second round last night, but Taiwan’s Ray Ho exited in the men’s doubles It is more than 10 years since Grigor Dimitrov reached his sole Wimbledon semi-final and back then it still seemed a reasonable bet that the Bulgarian once dubbed “Baby Federer” would win a Grand Slam title. There were semi-final runs at the US Open and Australian Open after that, but it has never quite happened and despite him still being ranked No. 21, it most likely never will. Dimitrov, 34, remains one of the most stylish players on the circuit though, with his elegant single-handed backhand and smooth all-court game a rare reminder of how tennis was before the power merchants turned
Spain are the favorites to win the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025, but star player Aitana Bonmati’s illness ahead of the tournament raises another question mark around a side which, despite their obvious quality, are not unstoppable. Having claimed the last two Ballon d’Or awards, Barcelona midfielder Bonmati is the game’s biggest star at present, so her absence in the final days before the start of Euro 2025 is a major setback. The 27-year-old came down with a fever in training last week, and was subsequently hospitalized and diagnosed with viral meningitis. Bonmati was discharged on Sunday and joined up with
INJURY TURMOIL: Despite stunning French Open champions Paolini and Errani to advance, Chan was forced to pull out after her partner’s tearful women’s singles defeat Last year’s mixed doubles champions Hsieh Su-wei of Taiwan and Poland’s Jan Zielinski on Monday crashed out of the quarter-finals at Wimbledon, leaving the Taiwanese star focused on pursuing a fifth women’s doubles title in London, while a partner injury forced compatriot Chan Hao-ching to give up on her doubles campaign. Hsieh and Zielinksi, who last year also won the Australia Open title, narrowly lost their opening set 7-6 (9/7), before Britain’s Joe Salisbury and Brazil’s Luisa Stefani stunned the former champions 6-3 at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. The Taiwanese-Polish duo had been dominant in the first two
Real Madrid’s FIFA Club World Cup quarter-final against Borussia Dortmund had taken three crazy turns during nine minutes of second-half stoppage time when Marcel Sabitzer chested the ball and sent a right-footed volley toward Thibaut Courtois’ post. Courtois leapt to his right, extended the long arm on his 2m frame and just managed to get his gloved fingertips on the ball, knocking it down. Courtois hit the ground as the ball bounded up. He looked skyward, planted his right hand to regain his balance, grabbed the ball with both hands on the second bounce and fell onto it with his chest. Sabitzer turned
