James Harden scored 29 points on Monday to lead the Houston Rockets to a 100-94 victory over the Charlotte Bobcats that ended their NBA losing streak at seven games.
The Rockets overcame a 35-point effort from Charlotte’s Kemba Walker, whose career-high scoring performance was not enough to prevent the Bobcats from enduring a club record 15th straight home defeat.
Harden scored 12 of his points in the fourth quarter, when Houston outscored Charlotte by a 26-13 margin.
Houston’s bench came up big, with Marcus Morris delivering 21 points and eight rebounds, while fellow reserve Carlos Delfino added 16 points.
“We needed this win,” Morris said. “We’ve just got to keep going and keep building from there.”
Up by 11 at halftime, the Bobcats shot a dismal 21.1 percent — connecting on only four of 19 from the floor — in the final period.
Houston’s Jeremy Lin was ineffective guarding Walker and did not play in the fourth quarter.
“When Lin backed off me, I was confident and I made them,” Walker said of his six three-pointers.
Rockets coach Kevin McHale changed his strategy for containing Walker in the final period.
“We tried to trap him and our guys played hard,” McHale said. “Patrick Beverley did a nice job with his quickness, trying to at least contain a guy like that.”
In his 10 minutes of playing time in the final quarter, Walker connected on just two of five shots and had no assists.
“It’s on me,” Walker said. “I’ve got to do a better job against the trap. I’ve got to make better decisions. If I can’t find my shot, then I’ve got to make better plays for others.”
Although Rockets players acknowledged they still have weaknesses to address, they were relieved to end the demoralizing skid.
“It’s really important, man, because it was all weighing on us,” Lin said. “We need to address what we need to address, but we don’t have to feel like there is a big elephant in the room.”
INJURY TURMOIL: Despite stunning French Open champions Paolini and Errani to advance, Chan was forced to pull out after her partner’s tearful women’s singles defeat Last year’s mixed doubles champions Hsieh Su-wei of Taiwan and Poland’s Jan Zielinski on Monday crashed out of the quarter-finals at Wimbledon, leaving the Taiwanese star focused on pursuing a fifth women’s doubles title in London, while a partner injury forced compatriot Chan Hao-ching to give up on her doubles campaign. Hsieh and Zielinksi, who last year also won the Australia Open title, narrowly lost their opening set 7-6 (9/7), before Britain’s Joe Salisbury and Brazil’s Luisa Stefani stunned the former champions 6-3 at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. The Taiwanese-Polish duo had been dominant in the first two
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has overturned French Olympic fencer Ysaora Thibus’ four-year suspension for doping, ruling that her positive test for a banned substance was caused by kissing her then-boyfriend, American fencer Race Imboden. Thibus, a silver medalist in team foil at the Tokyo Games, had tested positive for ostarine, a prohibited muscle-building substance, during a competition in Paris in January last year. However, CAS concluded there was no intentional wrongdoing, finding it scientifically plausible that repeated kissing over several days with Olympic medalist Imboden — who was taking ostarine at the time — led to accidental contamination. Switzerland’s Riola Xhemaili on Thursday scored a last-gasp goal to salvage a dramatic 1-1 draw with Finland that sent the joyous hosts through to the quarter-finals at Euro 2025, and heartbroken Finland home. Switzerland, who needed only a draw to advance based on goal-difference, finished second in Group A behind Norway to go through to the knockout round for the first time and are to face the winners of Group B, which would be world champions Spain as things stand. “I think we set ourselves a goal on the pitch, to write history, to go into the knockout stages, which we’ve never
