West Ham United rescued a 1-1 draw against Stoke City at Upton Park on Monday thanks to Joey O’Brien’s first-ever Premier League goal.
Republic of Ireland rightback O’Brien had never scored in the English topflight, despite a long career at that level with Bolton Wanderers and now West Ham, but the 26-year-old chose the perfect moment to end his drought.
Sam Allardyce’s side trailed to a goal early in the first half from Stoke striker Jonathan Walters until O’Brien slotted home from close range three minutes after the interval to earn his moment as the game’s unlikely hero.

O’Brien’s intervention maintained West Ham’s impressive start to the season and they remain seventh in the table, level on points with Arsenal and above the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and Newcastle United.
Stoke’s seventh draw from 12 league matches this season kept Tony Pulis’s team clear of the relegation zone, although it also extended their winless run on their travels to 16 matches.
“We could have finished them off with more clinical finishing, but there is another point on the board for us and we have to settle for that,” Allardyce said. “I liked the way we sustained the pressure on Stoke, the belief and the spirit was not dented by the early goal.”
The Stoke manager added: “We worked on the routine that produced our goal for two or three days and never scored once in training, but it was a great ball in and a great finish by Jon Walters. I’m not supposed to say this, but we obstructed a player.”
After all the pre-match talk that this would be a bruising battle between two sides who prefer the aggressive route-one approach, it was fitting that Stoke’s early opener arrived via a set piece rather than a intricate passing move.
Pulis’ side took the lead in the 12th minute when Glenn Whelan’s corner was met by Walters, who timed his run perfectly to drive his shot past Hammers goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen and beyond Andy Carroll’s attempt to clear off the line.
That was Walters’ third goal of the season and Stoke could have been further in front before halftime when midfielder Steven Nzonzi lashed a fierce strike against the crossbar from long-range.
Just before that, referee Chris Foy had turned down West Ham’s penalty appeals after Geoff Cameron’s push on Carroll.
However, the hosts came out with more energy in the second half and Kevin Nolan should have equalized almost immediately when the midfielder’s close-range header from George McCartney’s cross was straight at Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic.
Nolan did not have worry for long though, as West Ham equalized in the 48th minute when Gary O’Neil crossed from the right for O’Brien to flick home.
MARRED FINAL: As most of Senegalese players walked off the pitch after a controversial decision, some supporters threw objects and attempted to get onto the pitch Senegal on Sunday won the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as Pape Gueye’s extra-time winner sunk hosts Morocco 1-0 after a chaotic final that saw the eventual champions storm off the pitch late in the game. Brahim Diaz could have won the trophy for Morocco with a controversial spot-kick in the 24th minute of added time at the end of normal time as ugly scenes broke out in the stands. However, Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy easily saved the weak attempted “Panenka” chip by the Real Madrid winger, who was clearly distracted by the long delay that followed the penalty award.
James Harden on Friday scored 31 points and came up big in overtime to help the Los Angeles Clippers erase a double-digit deficit on the way to a 121-117 NBA victory over the Toronto Raptors. Harden scored 16 points in the fourth quarter and overtime as the Clippers pushed their wining steak to five games despite the absence of star Kawhi Leonard with a sprained right ankle. The Clippers trailed by 11 entering the fourth quarter, but Harden drilled a pair of free-throws with 1:24 left in regulation to tie it and after misses from both teams, they went to

Harris was one of four Detroit players to finish in double figures, with Jalen Duren adding 18 points and point guard Cade Cunningham scoring 16 points with 14 assists. The win sees Detroit extend their lead at the top of the Eastern Conference to 31-10, 5.5 games ahead of second-placed Boston, who fell to 26-16 with the defeat. Jaylen Brown led the Celtics scoring with 32 points and almost snatched victory in the
Qatar’s Nasser al-Attiyah on Saturday secured his sixth Dakar Rally car title in Saudi Arabia with Luciano Benavides scraping home by two seconds to claim the motorbike title. “We’ve worked very hard since last year. I might not be showing much emotion yet, but it’s there, deep down. We are so happy to win,” al-Attiyah said at the finish. Al-Attiyah, at the wheel of a Dacia, only had to avoid a final day slip-up to top the podium after bringing his career tally of stage wins to 50 on Friday.
