Sunderland stunned Manchester City with a stoppage-time winner to beat the Premier League leaders 1-0 on Sunday as Roberto Mancini’s side let the slip-ups of their main title rivals go unpunished.
With Manchester United and Chelsea slumping to home defeats the previous day and Tottenham Hotspur managing only a draw, City arrived at the Stadium of Light intending to make the chasing pack pay for dropping points.
Instead, they too were shocked when Ji Dong-won slotted home in the third minute of stoppage-time to snatch the three points for the hosts after a frantic finale in which City had desperately chased a winner of their own.

Television replays showed the South Korean was offside when Stephane Sessegnon played the ball to him, but it was not flagged and he coolly rounded goalkeeper Joe Hart with only 10 seconds to go.
“A team like us can’t concede a goal on the counterattack at the end,” Mancini told Sky Sports after his side’s second league defeat of the season. “It was offside and we can’t do anything about it.”
The result left City on 45 points from 19 games, ahead of second-placed United on goal-difference and six points in front of third-placed Spurs, who have played one game fewer.
The visitors made six changes from the side that drew 0-0 at West Bromwich Albion on Boxing Day, Mancini having an eye on today’s match at home to Liverpool, and they lacked a cutting edge in the first half as an overcrowded midfield stifled both teams.
City’s best chance came shortly before halftime when Edin Dzeko skimmed the top of the bar. Earlier, Sunderland saw Hart rush forward to force Nicklas Bendtner wide when the forward was through on goal.
Following a frustrating opening period, Mancini sought to introduce a creative spark by bringing forward Sergio Aguero on for defensive midfielder Nigel de Jong for the second half.
That change and the swap of playmaker David Silva for Samir Nasri 10 minutes later made City sharper going forward as they racked up several attempts on goal, but Sunderland continued to thwart the high-flying visitors.
Sunderland should have scored midway through the second half when Sessegnon got the better of City captain Vincent Kompany on the edge of the box, before sending his shot narrowly wide of the far post.
With the clock ticking down, City threw players forward and could have snatched it when Silva’s shot was pushed by goalkeeper Simon Mignolet into the path of Micah Richards, whose header bounced on to the bar before being cleared.
Somehow Sunderland, who were depleted because of illness and injuries, kept the leaders at bay, before embarking on a last-gasp counterattack.
Sessegnon’s through pass found substitute Ji, who kept his nerve to slot the ball into an empty net with the last kick of the game.
The win lifted Sunderland into 13th place as their revival since Martin O’Neill took over as manager last month continued.
“We knew we were going to have to withstand ferocious pressure from Manchester City. We did it and we did it remarkably well,” said O’Neill, who took over with the club in 16th place.
Manchester United on Tuesday confirmed Michael Carrick as interim manager until the end of the season, tasking him with leading the Red Devils back into the UEFA Champions League. “Having the responsibility to lead Manchester United is an honor,” said Carrick, 44, who won 12 major trophies in his 12-year playing career at United. The former midfielder previously had an unbeaten three-game stint as caretaker boss at Old Trafford in 2021. Carrick then took on his first permanent managerial role at second-tier Middlesbrough in October 2022 and was sacked in June last year after the club finished 10th in the
MARRED FINAL: As most of Senegalese players walked off the pitch after a controversial decision, some supporters threw objects and attempted to get onto the pitch Senegal on Sunday won the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as Pape Gueye’s extra-time winner sunk hosts Morocco 1-0 after a chaotic final that saw the eventual champions storm off the pitch late in the game. Brahim Diaz could have won the trophy for Morocco with a controversial spot-kick in the 24th minute of added time at the end of normal time as ugly scenes broke out in the stands. However, Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy easily saved the weak attempted “Panenka” chip by the Real Madrid winger, who was clearly distracted by the long delay that followed the penalty award.
James Harden on Friday scored 31 points and came up big in overtime to help the Los Angeles Clippers erase a double-digit deficit on the way to a 121-117 NBA victory over the Toronto Raptors. Harden scored 16 points in the fourth quarter and overtime as the Clippers pushed their wining steak to five games despite the absence of star Kawhi Leonard with a sprained right ankle. The Clippers trailed by 11 entering the fourth quarter, but Harden drilled a pair of free-throws with 1:24 left in regulation to tie it and after misses from both teams, they went to
Dallas Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg on Wednesday was ruled out for the second half of their 118-109 loss to the Denver Nuggets after the No. 1 pick sprained his left ankle in the first half. Flagg was called for a foul while defending against Peyton Watson and turned the ankle as he fell to the floor with 6 minutes, 1 second left in the second quarter. Flagg limped to the bench and continued to the locker room, but returned for the final 2 minutes, 35 seconds before the break. The 19-year-old did not come out for the second half before the announcement that
