New York’s Curtis Granderson hit a three-run homer in the first inning to set up the Yankees’ 9-3 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday, ending their run of three straight losses in the American League.
Granderson got his 31st homer of the season, before Los Angeles rookie pitcher Garrett Richards got his first major league out.

Robinson Cano tacked on a two-run shot in the seventh, getting within a single of hitting for the cycle.
Richards (0-1) allowed six runs in five innings, having been called up from the minors to fill in for suspended ace Jered Weaver.
New York starter Ivan Nova (11-4) took over the big league lead in wins for rookies, allowing five hits in six innings.
TWINS 5, RED SOX 2
In Minneapolis, Minnesota, Jim Thome hit a tiebreaking RBI double during Minnesota’s three-run eighth inning, which lifted the Twins over Boston.
Thome, who also had a run-scoring single, hit the 119th pitch of the game from Red Sox starter Jon Lester (11-6) to left field for a 3-2 lead.
Danny Valencia added an RBI double and Tsuyoshi Nishioka came through with a run-scoring single in the eighth.
The Twins got an outstanding effort from starter Nick Blackburn, who gave up only one unearned run in 6-2/3 innings.
INDIANS 10, TIGERS 3
In Cleveland, Ohio, the hosts shaved another game off Detroit’s lead in the AL Central division, reducing the gap to two games.
Ubaldo Jimenez (1-0) won in his first home start for Cleveland since being traded from Colorado. He allowed six hits in eight innings, striking out six and walking only one.
Jason Kipnis went five-for-five with four runs and three RBIs, becoming the first Cleveland rookie in 59 years to get five hits and score four times in a game.
He hit a two-run homer off Rick Porcello (11-7) to put the Indians up 4-0 in the second.
It was Cleveland’s 13th straight home win over the Tigers.

The Philadelphia Phillies overcame a six-run deficit to edge the Los Angeles Dodgers 9-8 on Wednesday and complete a three-game sweep in their National League series.
Ryan Howard and Hunter Pence homered for the Phillies, who won for the 12th time in 13 games and completed a 9-1 road trip.
Down 6-0 after three innings, the Phillies scored four runs in the sixth for a 9-7 lead. Howard’s 25th homer of the season was a tiebreaking, two-run shot with two outs.
CUBS 4, NATIONALS 2
In Chicago, Reed Johnson, Alfonso Soriano and Geovany Soto all homered to extend Chicago’s power-hitting streak and defeat Washington.
Johnson added three singles in his seventh career four-hit game. Soriano doubled and drove in two runs and Soto scored twice. The Cubs have 19 homers over their past eight games.
Chicago starter Rodrigo Lopez (3-3) allowed one earned run in 5-2/3 innings.
Nationals starter Ross Detwiler (1-2) gave up three runs over five innings. He fell to 0-8 in 16 career road appearances
BRAVES 6, MARLINS 2
In Miami, Dan Uggla extended his hitting streak to 31 games — the best by any player this season — as Atlanta beat Florida and completed a three-game road sweep.
Uggla’s two-run single in the first inning tied Rico Carty for the second-longest streak in franchise history. Tommy Holmes holds the record with 37 straight for the Boston Braves in 1945.
Uggla went three-for-five, his ninth multi-hit game during the longest hitting streak in the majors this season. Dodger Andre Ethier hit in 30 straight games.
Eric Hinske drove in two runs for the Braves, who have won six of seven.
Atlanta starter Tim Hudson (12-7) allowed two runs in 7-1/3 innings and struck out seven.
Florida’s Anibal Sanchez (6-6) stretched his winless streak to 11 games. He allowed five runs in 1-2/3 innings. The Marlins have lost seven straight.
