Holders Iraq beat an ultra--defensive North Korea 1-0 in a drab match on Wednesday to set up an Asian Cup quarter-final clash with Australia.
Three-times winners Iran, who had already won the group and will play South Korea in the last eight, made nine changes to their team, but still beat United Arab Emirates (UAE) 3-0.
Iran finished Group D with nine points from three matches with Iraq second on six. North Korea and UAE exited the tournament with one point apiece having failed to score a goal.

The quarter-final against Australia will bring Iraq’s German coach Wolfgang Sidka up against his compatriot Holger Osieck.
“I know him very well,” Sidka told reporters. “Unfortunately two German coaches play each other in the quarter-finals, I would like to see him later on.”
Iraq, needing a point to qualify for the last eight, began brightly and were denied an opening goal in the 17th minute when Mustafa Kareem flicked Samal Saeed’s header against the bar.
The holders only had to wait five minutes to open the scoring when North Korea goalkeeper Ri Myong-guk fell backwards after parrying a 25m drive from Kareem, allowing Kerrar Jasim to convert into an unguarded net.
The goal should have sparked the North Koreans, who needed to win to advance, but they continued with their safety first mentality and were restricted to shots from distance.
Not even their 200 supporters, all wearing a neat shirt and tie, could bring their team out of their shells. Led by an excitable choreographer, the North Korea fans chanted, waved flags and pumped their fists in unison throughout the drab contest.
German-based striker Jong Tae-se had the North Koreans best chance with 13 minutes left, but his low shot on the turn was straight at the goalkeeper.
“I think we deserved this victory especially in the first half I was very satisfied how we played,” Sidka said.
North Korea coach Jo Tong-sop told reporters his side had learned from their first Asian Cup since 1992.
“We got good experience during the tournament so we understand defending is important but attack is more important so in the future we will try and make our games more attacking,” Jo, who was non-committal about his future, said.
IRAN 3, UAE 0
At the Qatar Sports Club, Iran, suffering from a bout of flu that has hit several members of the squad and coaching staff, maintained their 100 percent Group D record with a 3-0 win over UAE.
Iran broke the deadlock in the 70th minute when Gholam Rezaei chased down the right wing and crossed for Mohammad Gholami to head against the bar with goalkeeper Majed Naser beaten.
He responded first to the rebound and headed that against the bar before Arash Afshin planted the second rebound into the empty net for his first international goal.
Afshin’s joy was short-lived, however, as he was red-carded five minutes later for fouling the goalkeeper.
There was still time for UAE defender Khalid Sebil to be sent off and Mohammad Nori added a second when he swept a shot into the corner of the net. The UAE’s Walid Abbas capped a disappointing tournament for his side by scoring his second own goal of the tournament in stoppage time.
A stunning Lamine Yamal strike on Thursday helped crown Barcelona La Liga champions with a 2-0 win over local rivals RCD Espanyol, with victory ensuring Real Madrid cannot catch them at the top of the table. Yamal’s effort and Fermin Lopez’s goal took Hansi Flick’s side seven points clear of Los Blancos with two matches remaining, to clinch Barcelona’s 28th title and complete a superb domestic treble. Only the UEFA Champions League title escaped an exciting young Barca side this season, as they won the league for the second time in six years, at Espanyol’s ground again just as in 2022-2023. SSC Napoli will have to wait one more week to seal the Serie A title after on Sunday being held to a goalless draw at Parma, while closest rivals Inter drew 2-2 in a dramatic game with SS Lazio. Antonio Conte’s team stayed one point ahead of Inter and were unfortunate not to win after twice striking the woodwork through Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa and Matteo Politano, while Scott McTominay also had a free-kick tipped onto the crossbar. The away side thought they would be handed a chance to take the points from the penalty spot in the 96th minute when David Neres
Jannik Sinner on Thursday marched into the semi-finals of the Italian Open after destroying Casper Ruud in straight sets 6-0, 6-1, while Coco Gauff won a marathon three-set battle with China’s Zheng Qinwen to advance to the women’s singles final. American Gauff is to face Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in today’s title match after pulling through 7-6 (7/3), 4-6, 7-6 (7/4) in a match that lasted over three-and-a-half hours. Ruud was supposed to be Sinner’s toughest test in Rome since he came back from his three-month doping ban, as the Norwegian came into the match in hot form on clay after winning in
Shohei Ohtani on Thursday delivered his first two-homer game of the season and had six RBIs as the Los Angeles Dodgers poured it on with five long balls in a 19-2 victory over the visiting Athletics. Max Muncy, Andy Pages and James Outman also hit home runs for the Dodgers, who left no doubt by taking a 13-2 lead following a seven-run third inning. Muncy and Kim Hye-seong each had three hits for Los Angeles. Dodgers right-hander Matt Sauer led off a bullpen game by allowing two runs in four innings. Left-hander Justin Wrobleski (1-1) finished with four scoreless innings after he
