Tony McCoy has had a year most people would kill for having won the world’s most challenging and best known race the Grand National and become the first jockey to be named BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
However, the 36-year-old from County Antrim in Northern Ireland can round it off in proper style should he guide Kauto Star to a record fifth King George VI Chase at Kempton Park today after the race was rescheduled from yesterday because of the freezing weather.
Kauto Star, who is the only horse to have regained the Cheltenham Gold Cup, already holds the record for winning the race four times in a row — legend Desert Orchid won it four times but over a five year stretch from 1986 to 1991.
wrist injury
McCoy, 15-times champion jockey, got the ride as Noel Fehily was ruled unfit with a recurrence of a wrist injury — he in turn had got the ride because trainer Paul Nicholls’ stable jockey Ruby Walsh broke his leg last month.
McCoy, though, has contacted Walsh and asked him about what is the best manner in which to ride the even money favorite, while he has also ridden him over showjumping fences at Nicholls’ stables and is really looking forward to the task ahead.
The humble Northern Irishman — who rode Don’t Push It to Grand National glory in April — was so keen to ride him that he asked close friend and retainer Jonjo O’Neill if he could opt out of riding Alberta’s Run in the King George so he could take the ride on the French-bred 10-year-old gelding.
“Like most other people in racing I have followed Kauto Star throughout his career and it is a huge thrill now to be riding such a horse, the best chaser in years, for the first time,” he wrote in his column for the Daily Telegraph.
heavy fall
“He did have a heavy fall in the Gold Cup [at Cheltenham in March], one of those which you are glad they get up from, but he appeared to show no ill effects when winning at Down Royal earlier this season,” the Ulsterman wrote. “He is a long way clear on the ratings and it is very hard to see him being beaten.”
With Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Imperial Commander and another Nicholls star Denman not participating because of injury and stable strategy respectively, Kauto Star faces a field of honest but not top class opponents.
Ironically his main rival may come from Alberta’s Run, who was second behind him in the King George two years ago but his form has shown a decline and took a heavy fall last time out at Ascot, though, he has the class to bounce back.
unknown quantities
Other than him the highly-rated fellow French bred Long Run, yet another Nicholl’s prospect seven-year-old The Nightingale and Sizing Europe, three relative unknown quantities may freshen up the run-in.
The Nightingale has recorded three wins in four over fences including an impressive last outing at Down Royal while two-time French Grade One victor Long Run — trained by Nicky Henderson — made an impression when winning the Grade One Feltham Chase here last year.
Sizing Europe, trained in Ireland by Harry de Bromhead, has four lengths to make up on Kauto Star from their race at Down Royal but there is no question of his ability having won the Arkle Chase at the Cheltenham Festival.
His trainer has risked the wrath of his family by traveling over with him and another stablemate on Dec. 23 thereby missing Christmas.
BOUNCE BACK: Curry scored 46 points in the Warriors’ victory over the Spurs, after ‘everybody stepped up’ following Tuesday’s blowout loss to Oklahoma City Nikola Jokic scoring 50 or more points had never been enough for the Denver Nuggets to win — until now. Jokic on Wednesday night tied the highest-scoring performance in the NBA this season with 55 points, as the Nuggets beat the Los Angeles Clippers 130-116 for their sixth straight victory. The Nuggets were 0-4 in his previous 50-point outbursts. “It’s a good feeling,” the three-time NBA Most Valuable Player said. He equaled Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who had 55 in a double-overtime game at the Indiana Pacers on Oct. 23. Jokic has been on a roll during Denver’s winning streak. He is the
TIGHT GAME: The Detroit Pistons, the NBA’s second-best team, barely outlasted the Washington Wizards, who fell to an NBA-worst 1-10 with their ninth consecutive loss Cade Cunningham’s triple double, Daniss Jenkins’ three-pointer at the buzzer and Javonte Green’s overtime dunk lifted Detroit past Washington 137-135 on Monday, stretching the Pistons’ win streak to seven games. In an unexpected thriller, the NBA’s second-best team barely outlasted a Wizards club that fell to an NBA-worst 1-10 with their ninth consecutive loss. “We knew how big this game was for us,” Jenkins said. “We wasn’t going to let nothing stop us from getting this W.” Cunningham made 14-of-45 shots and 16-of-18 free throws for a career-high 46 points, and added 12 rebounds, 11 assists, five steals and two
LIKE FINE WINE: Thirty-eight-year-old Djokovic won his 101st title of his career in Athens, becoming the oldest tournament winner since Ken Roswell, 44, in 1977 Elena Rybakina on Saturday clinched her biggest title since Wimbledon in 2022, defeating world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka 6-3, 7-6 (7/0) at the WTA Finals in Riyadh. The world No. 6 put on yet another serving masterclass and was at her returning best as she became the first Kazakh and the first player representing an Asian country to lift the WTA Finals singles trophy. Having gone 3-0 in round-robin play, Rybakina earned a record US$5.235 million and would finish the year ranked No. 5 in the world. “It’s been an incredible week, I honestly didn’t expect any result, and to go so far,
The tri-nation Twenty20 international series featuring hosts Pakistan, as well as Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe, is to be played entirely in Rawalpindi from Tuesday next week, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said yesterday, after this week’s suicide bombing in the capital, Islamabad. The change came after at least eight Sri Lankan players asked to leave over security fears following Tuesday’s bombing that killed 12 people and wounded 27. Their country’s cricket board issued a stern directive to the team to stay put or face consequences. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said the decision to stay was taken after “close consultations” with hosts Pakistan who
