If there is one man who should know how to end Barcelona’s four-match winning streak in El Clasico it is Jose Mourinho.
His inside knowledge of the club is second to none after working as assistant to Barca coaches Bobby Robson and Louis van Gaal in the late 1990s, but his record against them is mixed.
He has knocked Barca out of the Champions League twice — once with Chelsea and last season in the semi-finals with Inter — although the overall statistics read three wins, three draws and four defeats as manager of Chelsea and Inter.
On top of that, Mourinho has never won at Camp Nou. However, the “special one” is supremely confident that he has the tactics to get the better of his former employers.
IMPOSE STYLE
“I know how to play against Barca, from memory,” Mourinho said in an interview in September. “You can deactivate them by imposing your style. If you want to play the way they do, you will lose ... because individually and collectively they are the best [at that style].”
Inter’s 3-2 aggregate win over Barca in the Champions League semis points the way forward and the watchwords are tactical discipline, physical fitness and psychological strength.
“You can’t let them catch you out in the first phase of possession,” he said. “You have to go direct from the defensive area to the second or third phase with a long movement of the ball to surprise them.”
“Barca have many more problems when they have to do steady build-ups,” he said.
Real’s standard lineup this season, with Xabi Alonso and Sami Khedira in the midfield holding roles, will be bolstered by the tracking back and harrying of Angel Di Maria, Mesut Ozil, Cristiano Ronaldo and Gonzalo Higuain in tomorrow’s Clasico.
Mourinho has said he prefers zonal rather than man-to-man marking and through strict adherence to this he will seek to cut the supply lines from Xavi and company to the No. 1 dangerman, Barcelona’s top scorer Lionel Messi.
When Barca’s possession breaks down, Real will try to pounce quickly on the counter-attack, with long balls behind their opponents’ high defensive line.
FORMER PLAYERS
The Catalans are second in the standings behind Real this season because they have dropped five points to the Madrid side’s four in their 12 matches so far, and those five points were lost against teams managed by former Barca players.
Hercules’ Esteban Vigo won 2-0 at Camp Nou and Real Mallorca’s Michael Laudrup drew 1-1 there last month.
“Everyone knows how to play against Barcelona,” former Danish international Laudrup said in an interview. “The problem is that it’s one thing on paper and another thing on the pitch.”
“Barcelona always need the ball to feel good. Madrid don’t ... because they have so much quality on the counter-attack. In just three passes it can be a goal,” he said.
The US’ bid for a fourth consecutive CONCACAF Nations League title came to a stunning end as they fell 1-0 to Panama after a stoppage-time goal from Cecilio Waterman on Thursday in Inglewood, California. Despite dominating possession, the US struggled to break down a resilient Panama side for long periods. Panama spent the bulk of the match defending, but pounced on a giveaway by the US before substitute forward Waterman sent a shot from the right side of the area to the bottom left corner late in stoppage time. Up next for Panama in tomorrow’s final is to be Mexico, who beat
DOMINATION: McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris took the first two spots as Mercedes’ George Russell and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen followed them Australian Oscar Piastri yesterday roared back from season-opening disappointment in his home race by winning the Formula One Chinese Grand Prix from pole position in a McLaren one-two with championship-leading teammate Lando Norris. George Russell finished third for Mercedes, ahead of Red Bull’s reigning champion Max Verstappen with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Saturday’s sprint winner Lewis Hamilton fifth and sixth respectively. Piastri’s win denied Norris a third victory in a row, including last year’s Abu Dhabi season-ender, but left champions McLaren unbeaten in two races so far this year. “Mega job guys. The car was very, very lovely,” Piastri said
TO FINAL FOUR: France had 22 chances and scored two goals, while Croatia could not manage a single shot on target in 120 minutes. Michael Olise opened the scoring and Ousmane Dembele doubled their lead 10 minutes from time to send the tie into extra time after their 2-0 loss in Split, Croatia, on Thursday. France had a total of
Armand Duplantis will be among the reigning Olympic champions adding star power to the world indoor championships this weekend when the Chinese city of Nanjing hosts the first major global athletics meet since the Paris Games last year.
