Defending champions Bayern Munich were held to a 1-1 draw at Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday evening to find themselves lagging 14 points behind Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund.
With top side Dortmund earlier coming from behind to win 2-1 at SC Freiburg to pick up their 11th league win from 13 games, Bayern are leaving themselves a considerable gap to bridge with more than a third of the season now played.
Bayern are up to eighth in the league, while Leverkusen are third.

“The point is OK, but we could have won,” Bayern goal-scorer Mario Gomez said.
Gomez was left kicking himself after missing a late chance, while Bastian Schweinsteiger had a header disallowed for offside after just two minutes.
Munich took the lead when national players Thomas Mueller, the top-scorer at the World Cup, Schweinsteiger and Gomez combined for a dream goal.
Mueller lobbed in a cross from the flank, Schweinsteiger, who led Germany in the goalless draw against Sweden in midweek, chipped Leverkusen goalkeeper Rene Adler and striker Gomez volleyed into the net on 34 minutes.
It was Gomez’s fifth league goal in four games and his eighth this season, but Leverkusen drew level when Bayern’s Croatia defender Danijel Pranjic brought down midfielder Stanley Sam on the edge of the penalty area in first-half stoppage-time and Chile striker Arturo Vidal fired home the 47th-minute spot-kick.
Earlier, Bundesliga leaders Dortmund came from behind to earn a 2-1 win at title rivals Freiburg to keep their seven-point lead over second-placed FSV Mainz 05, who ended their three-game losing streak.
The winner came on 78 minutes when Freiburg defender Mensur Mujdza slid the ball into his own net as Dortmund attacked in waves to seal their 11th win from 13 league games.
Mainz are back up to second after they also fought back with a 3-2 win over Borussia Moenchengladbach.
Schalke 04 hammered fellow Champions League side Werder Bremen 4-0 as former Spain and Real Madrid striker Raul scored a hat-trick.
The win leaves Schalke 14th and Bremen 11th.
Hannover 96 are fourth after their 3-2 win at Hamburg SV, while TSG 1899 Hoffenheim are fifth after they enjoyed a 4-0 win at Eintracht Frankfurt. Kaiserslautern won 3-1 at Nuremberg.
Marta Kostyuk’s maiden WTA 1000 title in Madrid came on Saturday thanks to her power, poise and a pair of unexpected lucky shorts. The world No. 23 beat eighth-ranked Mirra Andreeva 6-3, 7-5 in under 90 minutes to secure the most prestigious trophy of her career, her third professional singles title and second in less than a month after Rouen. Yet as the 23-year-old Ukrainian posed for photographs at the Caja Magica, it was not just the silverware that caught the eye. Held alongside her team and her two dogs, Kostyuk showed off a piece of black men’s underwear, prompting
Throwing more than US$5 billion at a divisive new tour and walking away after five seasons does not look like good business, but LIV Golf was not all bad news for Saudi Arabia. Oil-funded LIV, which poached top stars and sent golf’s establishment into a tailspin, helped push the conservative kingdom into global view — one of its key aims, experts said. The exit, confirmed on Thursday after weeks of speculation, does not signal a flight of Saudi money from sport, even after the Middle East war that sparked Iranian attacks around the Gulf, they said. “Saudi Arabia is not
Arsenal stormed six points clear at the top of the English Premier League as Bukayo Saka and Viktor Gyokeres put Fulham to the sword in a 3-0 win, while West Ham United’s defeat at Brentford offered Tottenham Hotspur a lifeline in the battle for survival. The Gunners have stumbled toward the finish line in their quest for a first league title in 22 years, blowing a sizeable lead over Manchester City in a series of nervous displays. However, the return of Saka, making his first start in six weeks, freed up Mikel Arteta’s men in a dominant performance that shrugged
China’s Wu Yize on Monday won the World Snooker Championship for the first time with a dramatic 18-17 victory over Shaun Murphy in the final. Wu held his nerve to seal his thrilling triumph in a tense last frame shoot-out at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre. The 22-year-old is the second Chinese player to win the world title after Zhao Xintong beat Mark Williams to make history as the first Asian to lift the trophy last year. Wu is also the second-youngest player to be crowned world champion at the Crucible after Stephen Hendry, who was 21 when he won in 1990. “I have been trying
