Buses carrying Serbia fans were later escorted out of the city by police to avoid further clashes with Italy fans.
Officers seized sticks, metal bars and knives from the Serbia fans, as well as a bag carrying large explosive fireworks.
The most seriously injured in the violence early yesterday was a member of the carabinieri, who was rushed to hospital after an explosive device detonated in his face. A Serbia fan also suffered facial injuries.
The match was abandoned on Tuesday night just six minutes in, after Italy’s goalkeeper was hit by a flare, which Serbian fans were throwing onto the pitch and at Italy supporters.
After the game, in the early hours of yesterday, Italian police kept Serbia fans hemmed into a gated parking area, intending to release them in small groups to waiting buses.
The clashes started when some of the fans managed to break out and police in riot gear moved to try to get them under control.
There was trouble when the Serbia players left their team hotel, as Serbia fans attacked goalkeeper Vladimir Stojkovic, who was hit by a flare thrown on to the team bus.
