The 2010-2011 NHL season began on Thursday, with the Carolina Hurricanes holding on to beat the Minnesota Wild 4-3 in the opening game.
Brandon Sutter scored twice for Carolina, with goals also coming from Anton Babchuk — back after a year in the Russian KHL — and Jussi Jokinen in front of his Finnish fans.
Guillaume Latendresse scored for Minnesota 3:33 into the game, but Sutter tied it on a power play with 10 seconds left in the first period.

New Minnesota center Matt Cullen tied it 2-2 against his former team with a power-play goal in the second period, and Brent Burns scored for the Wild with 3:21 left, but Carolina hung on.

In Pittsburgh, surprise goaltender selection Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 29 shots in his NHL debut to help Philadelphia win and spoil Pittsburgh’s first game in its new arena.

An above-capacity 18,289 jammed into the Consol Energy Arena ,but left disappointed as Danny Briere and Blair Betts scored the first two goals to put the Flyers in command. Claude Giroux also scored for the visitors.
Alex Goligoski recorded Pittsburgh’s first power-play tally of the season, and Tyler Kennedy added the Penguins’ second goal of the third period.
AVALANCHE 4, BLACKHAWKS 3, OT
In Denver, Paul Stastny scored twice, including the game-winner 3:40 into overtime, to lift Colorado over defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago.
Chris Stewart and Matt Duchene also scored for the Avalanche.
Stastny’s winning goal from in front was set up by a pass out of the corner by Duchene. Blackhawks goalie Marty Turco partially blocked the shot, but the puck trickled into the net.
Patrick Sharp, Bryan Bickell and Marian Hossa also scored for the Blackhawks, who have dropped five of their past six -season openers.
MAPLE LEAFS 3, CANADIENS 2
In Toronto, the hosts edged undermanned Montreal with goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere making 26 saves.
Giguere kicked away a great chance early and wisely poke-checked the puck off Lars Eller’s stick in the third period with the Maple Leafs clinging to a one-goal lead.
Giguere also weathered a late storm as the Canadiens pushed for the tying goal, sticking out his left pad to deny Montreal captain Brian Gionta twice from in close.
Tim Brent, Phil Kessel, Clarke MacArthur scored for the Maple Leafs, who won their first home opener for 10 years.
Dustin Boyd and Jeff Halpern each had a goal in their first game with Montreal.
OILERS 4, FLAMES 0
In Edmonton, Jordan Eberle scored on his NHL debut as Edmonton downed Calgary.
Oilers goalie Nikolai Khabibulin stopped 37 shots for the shutout in his first regular-season start since he injured his back last November.
Gilbert Brule, Ales Hemsky and new captain Shawn Horcoff also scored for Edmonton, which lost all six meetings with the Flames last season en route to the posting the NHL’s worst record.
