The Olympic committees of Taiwan and Japan inked an agreement yesterday to boost bilateral cooperation and interaction.
Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee chairman Thomas Tsai signed the deal with his Japanese counterpart Tsunekazu Takeda, president of the Japanese Olympic Committee, during the first Youth Olympic Games in Singapore.
Tsai said he expects that “the links and friendship between the two organizations will become closer and that sports exchanges will also become more frequent in the future.”
On the basis of “mutual respect and sovereign equality” and promoting “understanding between the peoples of Taiwan and Japan,” the two sides agreed to share information on Olympic sports activities, give each other support, and encourage athletes and coaches of the two countries to attend sports events such as the Olympics.
Athletes and coaches are also allowed to train in each other’s country while the bilateral cooperation includes exchanges of personnel, such as officials, staff in charge of sports affairs and judges.
In addition, the two sides have agreed to coordinate on measures to combat the use of banned drugs in sports.
Both sides have agreed to meet annually to discuss the intended activities for the next year for the effective period, which will last until Dec. 31, 2016, with the possibility of being extended an additional four years.
Also present at the signing ceremony were Sports Affairs Council Minister Tai Hsia-ling and Representative to Singapore Vanessa Shih.
