Hughes (5-0) struck out eight to help keep New York within one-and-a-half games of American League East leaders Tampa Bay.
Detroit pitcher Jeremy Bonderman (1-2) took the loss despite striking out a season-best seven in a season-long seven innings.

In the early game, Detroit won 2-0 thanks to starter Rick Porcello (3-3), who pitched seven innings in his best outing of the year. Magglio Ordonez scored and drove in a run in the sixth inning.
New York starter Javier Vasquez (1-4) lost despite allowing only an infield hit through the first five innings and striking out seven.

Yorvit Torrealba drove in two runs against his former team to help the San Diego Padres beat the San Francisco Giants 5-2 in Wednesday’s clash of the National League West’s top teams.
The Padres increased their Western Division lead over San Francisco to two-and-a-half games and extended their record against the Giants this season to 5-0.
San Diego’s Clayton Richard (2-2) won despite allowing seven hits for the fourth time this season.
