Manchester City moved into fourth place in the Premier League after Gareth Barry’s late equalizer rescued a controversial 1-1 draw at Stoke City on Tuesday.
Roberto Mancini’s side looked set to suffer another disappointment against Stoke, who had Abdoulaye Faye sent off early in the second half, as the hosts took the lead through Glenn Whelan in the closing stages, but England midfielder Barry leveled with just five minutes left at the Britannia Stadium to lift City above Liverpool into the final Champions League place with a game in hand still to play.
Stoke felt hard done by at the end as Ryan Shawcross’s stoppage-time goal was harshly ruled out for a foul on City goalkeeper Shay Given.

Mancini made five changes to the side that squandered the lead in their 1-1 draw against Stoke in the FA Cup on Saturday, with Wayne Bridge, Pablo Zabaleta, Stephen Ireland, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Martin Petrov all dropped.
Rory Delap’s trademark long throw had caused City all manner of problems at the weekend and led to Ricardo Fuller’s equalizer, so it was no surprise to see the midfielder take every chance to do the same in the early stages.
Four times inside the opening 10 minutes Delap unleashed his rocket throws and Shawcross almost took advantage twice as he headed over and then had an effort cleared by Micah Richards.
It wasn’t just throw-ins that troubled the City defense. From Liam Lawrence’s free-kick, Mamady Sidibe had a golden chance to score, but the Mali striker shot tamely at Given. Faye was next to threaten when he met Lawrence’s corner with a powerful header that Joleon Lescott had to scramble clear.
City finally fashioned a sight of goal when Barry shot wide, then Paraguay striker Santa Cruz tried his luck with a volley from Adam Johnson’s cross.
After being battered in the first half, City got a break when Emmanuel Adebayor raced onto a long punt from Given and Faye responded by hauling down the Togo striker outside the penalty area. Referee Alan Wiley consulted with his assistant before showing Faye a straight red card.
City found it hard to make their one-man advantage count, however, and Stoke were back on the attack when Fuller appealed for a penalty after Barry blocked his route to goal.
Tony Pulis’ side made City pay for their nervous display as Whelan opened the scoring in the 72nd minute.
Johnson sliced his attempted clearance of Delap’s cross into the path of Whelan and his shot from the edge of the area deceived Given.
To City’s credit they took control and equalized with five minutes to play when Adebayor flicked onto Barry, who scored at the second attempt after his first effort hit a post.
There was still time for more drama as Given missed a Delap throw and Shawcross headed home, only to see his effort disallowed for a foul on the goalkeeper.
‘AWFUL PERFORMANCE’: Golden State were always chasing the game after failing to threaten from long range, making just eight of 33 three-point attempts Aaron Gordon on Monday scored 38 points as the Denver Nuggets shrugged off the absence of Nikola Jokic to halt the Golden State Warriors’ seven-game winning streak with a 114-105 victory over their Western Conference rivals. A dazzling display from Gordon inspired what was ultimately a comfortable win for Denver, who were missing regular starters Jokic and Jamal Murray from their lineup. The absentees were barely felt by Denver, who startled the Warriors early at San Francisco’s Chase Center and led for most of the game. The Warriors threatened to stage a late rally after slashing the Nuggets’ fourth-quarter lead from 15 points
Barcelona’s Ferran Torres scored twice on Sunday to help secure a late 4-2 comeback win at Atletico Madrid in a pulsating La Liga clash that took the Catalan side back to the top of the table. Barca have 60 points and a game in hand after last week’s postponement of their home game with CA Osasuna. They are level on points with Real Madrid, who won 2-1 at Villarreal on Saturday. “I am happy and proud of this team,” Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick told a news conference. “They never give up... It’s a great three points and we are happy to
Chris Wood has fired Nottingham Forest into surprise UEFA Champions League contention and now the striker wants to score the goals to help New Zealand make history at the FIFA World Cup. New Zealand are strong favorites to qualify out of the Oceania region over the next week and reach the World Cup for only the third time. At the country’s two previous appearances at the finals, in 1982 and 2010, they have failed to win a match in six attempts. With Wood captaining the side and leading from the front, he told local media yesterday that the current squad can finally deliver
Paolo Banchero on Sunday scored 24 points as the Orlando Magic overturned a 13-point deficit to end the Cleveland Cavaliers’ 16-game unbeaten streak with a gutsy 108-103 road victory. Cleveland, the runaway Eastern Conference leaders, had looked poised to extend their franchise-record winning run after surging clear of Orlando early in the third quarter, but after a season where they have staged hefty winning comebacks of their own, the tables turned on Cleveland in the face of a furious burst of Orlando scoring. The Magic outscored Cleveland 35-23 in the third quarter, with Franz Wagner leading the charge with nine points and
