Less than an hour after Juan Pablo Montoya celebrated his first NASCAR pole, it was taken away from him because of a technical violation on Friday.
NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said Montoya’s fast lap was disqualified because a postqualifying inspection discovered his rear shock absorbers exceeded the maximum gas pressure allowed.
That moved two-time reigning Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson up to the pole, with Montoya dropped to 42nd in the 43-car field for today’s Camping World RV 400 at Kansas Speedway.

It was a blow to Montoya, 24th in the points standings and struggling for most of the year to be competitive.
A team spokesperson said Chip Ganassi Racing officials were “evaluating the situation.”
With Montoya’s lap average of 172.150mph (277.04kph) disallowed, Johnson’s 172.007mph gave him his fifth pole of the season and 18th of his career.
Matt Kenseth, another of the Chasers, moved up to third, but none of the other 10 were able to break into the top 10 and six of the contenders wound up 27th or worse.
“It was a very, very good effort for us,” Johnson said before finding out he was on the pole.
“Everybody knows how important track position is. I thought that the 18 [Kyle Busch], the 99 [Carl Edwards] and the 31 [Jeff Burton], I thought some of those guys were much stronger than they posted today in qualifying. I thought they were better than that in practice. I was shocked to see some of those guys on the right side of the [timing] screen and at the bottom of it,” Johnson said.
“But this is just one day of three and the important day is Sunday. It doesn’t mean it’s a layup weekend where we pick up points on the other Chase competitors, but every little bit helps,” he said.
Among the Chase competitors, after Montoya’s disqualification, Dale Earnhardt Jr was 11th, an ailing Jeff Gordon qualified 13th, Greg Biffle, winner of the first two events of the 10-race Chase, was 18th and Clint Bowyer 24th.
The disappointments were Busch in 27th, Denny Hamlin 30th, Edwards 36th, Kevin Harvick 38th, Burton 39th and Tony Stewart 41st.
Biffle was just one of a number of unhappy drivers after his qualifying run on the slick 2.4km oval.
“We were hoping for a little bit better that that,” said Biffle, teammate of Kenseth, Edwards, 13th-place David Ragan and 17th-place Jamie McMurray at Roush Fenway Racing. “We’ve just got something wrong with our cars here, all of us do, the whole group. I guess we’ve got one more day to figure it out.”
The disappointed Stewart, currently seventh in the standings and hoping to push his way into contention with eight races left in the Chase, couldn’t explain his poor qualifying effort.
“We’ve been decent here,” he said. “We’ve been decent all the way up until that qualifying run right there. I don’t know what happened there. Something must have happened. We were decent in practice this morning, for sure.”
‘AWFUL PERFORMANCE’: Golden State were always chasing the game after failing to threaten from long range, making just eight of 33 three-point attempts Aaron Gordon on Monday scored 38 points as the Denver Nuggets shrugged off the absence of Nikola Jokic to halt the Golden State Warriors’ seven-game winning streak with a 114-105 victory over their Western Conference rivals. A dazzling display from Gordon inspired what was ultimately a comfortable win for Denver, who were missing regular starters Jokic and Jamal Murray from their lineup. The absentees were barely felt by Denver, who startled the Warriors early at San Francisco’s Chase Center and led for most of the game. The Warriors threatened to stage a late rally after slashing the Nuggets’ fourth-quarter lead from 15 points
Barcelona’s Ferran Torres scored twice on Sunday to help secure a late 4-2 comeback win at Atletico Madrid in a pulsating La Liga clash that took the Catalan side back to the top of the table. Barca have 60 points and a game in hand after last week’s postponement of their home game with CA Osasuna. They are level on points with Real Madrid, who won 2-1 at Villarreal on Saturday. “I am happy and proud of this team,” Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick told a news conference. “They never give up... It’s a great three points and we are happy to
Chris Wood has fired Nottingham Forest into surprise UEFA Champions League contention and now the striker wants to score the goals to help New Zealand make history at the FIFA World Cup. New Zealand are strong favorites to qualify out of the Oceania region over the next week and reach the World Cup for only the third time. At the country’s two previous appearances at the finals, in 1982 and 2010, they have failed to win a match in six attempts. With Wood captaining the side and leading from the front, he told local media yesterday that the current squad can finally deliver
Paolo Banchero on Sunday scored 24 points as the Orlando Magic overturned a 13-point deficit to end the Cleveland Cavaliers’ 16-game unbeaten streak with a gutsy 108-103 road victory. Cleveland, the runaway Eastern Conference leaders, had looked poised to extend their franchise-record winning run after surging clear of Orlando early in the third quarter, but after a season where they have staged hefty winning comebacks of their own, the tables turned on Cleveland in the face of a furious burst of Orlando scoring. The Magic outscored Cleveland 35-23 in the third quarter, with Franz Wagner leading the charge with nine points and
