Sam Querrey was chosen ahead of US teammate James Blake on Tuesday for the team’s Davis Cup semi-final against Spain.
Querrey’s name was on the official nomination list released by the International Tennis Federation, but it noted it was still awaiting confirmation on his eligibility. Querrey has never played in the Davis Cup.
It was unclear why the 11th-ranked Blake was dropped. Last year, Blake teamed up with Andy Roddick and Bob and Mike Bryan to give the Americans their record 32nd Davis Cup title.

Roddick and the Bryan brothers were chosen on Tuesday along with Querrey for the best-of-five series from Sept. 19 to Sept.21 on outdoor clay in Madrid.
Last Thursday, US captain Patrick McEnroe said Blake would be on the team with Roddick and the Bryan brothers for a record extending 11th straight time.
Spain will be led by Rafael Nadal, the French Open and Wimbledon champion. David Ferrer, Fernando Verdasco and Feliciano Lopez are also on the team.
Argentina will host Russia on outdoor clay in Buenos Aires in the other semi-final.
In the World Group playoffs, US Open champion Roger Federer and runner-up Andy Murray will both play. Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic is also on the nomination list.
Federer will lead Switzerland against visiting Belgium on indoor hardcourts in Lausanne, and Murray will help Britain against Austria on the grass at Wimbledon.
Russia will be led by sixth-ranked Nikolay Davydenko, who will play alongside Igor Andreev, Dmitry Tursunov and Igor Kunitsyn.
Argentina will counter with David Nalbandian, Juan Martin Del Potro, Agustin Calleri and Guillermo Canas. Del Potro won four tournaments leading up to the US Open, where he lost to Murray in the quarter-finals.
The Davis Cup final will be played from Nov. 21 to Nov. 23.
Federer rebounded from losses in the French Open and Wimbledon finals to win his 13th Grand Slam title on Monday at the US Open.
Although he rarely plays in the team event, Federer often plays for Switzerland when the nation is trying to get into the World Group. Last year, he won two matches but wasted a match point in doubles in a 3-2 loss to the Czech Republic that sent the Swiss down to the zonal group.
Murray will team up with brother Jamie Murray, Alex Bogdanovic and Ross Hutchins against Austria’s Jurgen Melzer, Alexander Peya, Martin Fischer and Julian Knowle.
Djokovic will team up with Janko Tipsarevic, Viktor Troicki and Nenad Zimonjic on outdoor hardcourts against Slovakia’s Lukas Lacko, Dominik Hrbaty, Filip Polasek and Michal Mertinak in Bratislava.
Also in the playoffs, it’s: Chile vs Australia; Croatia vs Brazil; Israel vs Peru; Netherlands vs South Korea and Romania vs India.
