Trailing 3-0, Mark Teixeira homered in the sixth and Howie Kendrick scored on a ground-out in the seventh to cut Minnesota’s lead to 3-2.
Teixeira led off the eighth with a double against Denny Reyes and scored when Guerrero drove an 0-1 pitch from Jesse Crain (5-3) to center for his third triple of the season. Matthews later tripled in the go-ahead run and scored on Juan Rivera’s sacrifice fly.
WHITE SOX 6, RAYS 5, 10 INNINGS
In Chicago, Alexei Ramirez singled home the winning run in the 10th inning after A.J. Pierzynski’s bizarre trip around the bases as Chicago rallied to avoid a sweep.
Jim Thome hit his 534th homer, Carlos Quentin also connected and the White Sox tied it at 5-5 in the ninth on pinch-hitter Paul Konerko’s two-out single off fill-in closer Dan Wheeler.
Pierzynski led off the 10th with a single against Jason Hammel (4-4), then tagged up and went to second on a fly-out to center.
Jermaine Dye sent a grounder toward shortstop, Pierzynski got caught in a rundown and the strange play unfolded.
Pierzynski appeared to get tagged out after falling, but second base umpire Doug Eddings signaled safe. Eddings called interference on Rays third baseman Willy Aybar, apparently ruling that he bumped the runner after a throw toward second. Replays showed that Pierzynski initiated the contact, hitting Aybar with his left elbow before falling to the ground.
Tampa Bay infielders and manager Joe Maddon argued vehemently to no avail and Pierzynski was awarded third. Hammel intentionally walked Thome before Ramirez singled to right.
YANKEES 8, ORIOLES 7
In Baltimore, Maryland, Robinson Cano hit the tie-breaking homer in the seventh inning after New York blew a five-run lead as the Yankees hung on to finish a three-game sweep.
Cano went four-for-five with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Johnny Damon hit a three-run homer and Bobby Abreu had three hits for the Yankees.

In Toronto, Jed Lowrie hit a solo homer in the 11th inning and Dustin Pedroia had a three-run shot as Boston won for the 11th time in 16 games on the road.
Lowrie hit a one-out drive to right, his second big league homer, off right-hander Brandon League (0-2), who had not allowed a run in his previous 12 appearances. Lowrie, playing third base, also threw out a runner at the plate on a sixth-inning relay.
Vernon Wells also homered for Toronto, his third in two games.

Pedro Feliz hit a tying RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth and delivered a three-run homer with two outs in the 11th to lift the Philadelphia Phillies over the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-2 in the National League on Sunday.
The Phillies closed within a half-game of the National League East-leading New York Mets, while Los Angeles remained three games behind Arizona in the West.
After the Phillies rallied off closer Jonathan Broxton in the ninth, the Dodgers loaded the bases with no outs in the 10th against Chad Durbin (5-2), but couldn’t score.
Shane Victorino led off Philadelphia’s 11th with a double to left field off Joe Beimel (4-1). Victorino didn’t run too hard out of the box, so left fielder Manny Ramirez played it like a routine single.
But Victorino turned it on rounding first base and Ramirez had no chance to get him after lobbing a throw to the infield.
Jason Johnson entered and walked Chris Coste. Jayson Werth advanced the runners with a ground-out, but pitcher Cole Hamels, batting as a pinch-hitter, popped out to second base.
Feliz hit the next pitch into the seats in left-center for his second career game-winning homer.
ASTROS 6, METS 4
In New York, Darin Erstad and Brad Ausmus hit home runs in the 10th inning as Houston beat New York.
Hunter Pence added a two-run shot as Houston overcame Carlos Beltran’s two homers, improving to 3-3 on their seven-game road trip.
Pedro Feliciano (2-4), the Mets’ sixth pitcher, gave up both home runs in the 10th and New York lost consecutive games for the first time since Aug. 11. The National League East leaders fell to 1-5 against Houston this season.
ROCKIES 4, REDS 3, 12 INNINGS
In Denver, Colorado, Omar Quintanilla homered with one out in the 12th inning as Colorado took advantage of five Cincinnati errors for the victory.
Colorado, who stranded 18 runners, tied it in the ninth thanks to two errors and a balk. Matt Holliday scored the tying run on a wild throw by right fielder Jay Bruce.
Quintanilla, who entered as a defensive replacement at second base in the 12th, hit Mike Lincoln’s 1-2 pitch into the right-field bleachers for his second homer of the season.

The 30-year-old’s performances with the Los Angeles Dodgers have consolidated his position as a baseball legend in the making, and a national icon in his native Japan. He continues to find new ways to amaze, this year becoming the first player to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases
Zhang Shuai yesterday said that she nearly quit after losing 24 matches in a row — now the world No. 595 is into the quarter-finals of her home China Open. The 35-year-old is to face Spain’s Paula Badosa as the lowest-ranked player to reach this stage in the history of the tournament after Badosa reeled off 11 of the last 12 games in a 6-4, 6-0 victory over US Open finalist Jessica Pegula. Zhang went into Beijing on a barren run lasting more than 600 days and her string of singles defeats was the second-longest on the WTA Tour Open era, which
Francesco Bagnaia yesterday profited from a mistake by rookie Pedro Acosta to win the Japan MotoGP sprint and close the gap on overall championship leader, Jorge Martin. Spaniard Acosta crashed with four laps to go while leading the field at Motegi, allowing defending world champion Bagnaia to take first ahead of Enea Bastianini and Marc Marquez. Spain’s Martin finished fourth and saw his overall lead over Italian Bagnaia in the championship standings cut to 15 points. “I am very happy because with these conditions, it’s not very easy to win and gain points,” Bagnaia said after a sprint race that took place under
Naomi Osaka is braced for a “battle” after yesterday setting up a clash with Coco Gauff in the round-of-16 of the China Open, while top seed Aryna Sabalenka also marched on. Osaka defeated 60th-ranked American Katie Volynets 6-3, 6-2 and next faces Gauff in a showdown of former US Open champions in Beijing. World No. 2 Sabalenka swatted aside Ashlyn Krueger 6-2, 6-2 for her 14th consecutive victory and plays another American in 24th-ranked Madison Keys.
