Juande Ramos resigned on Friday night as manager of Sevilla, clearing the way for the Spaniard to join London club Tottenham Hotspur with a lucrative contract.
Without mentioning Tottenham by name, Ramos said on his Web site www.juanderamos.com that he had received an offer he could not refuse and was about to embark on the most ambitious endeavor of his career.
"For my family and my profession, it is impossible not go to London," Ramos wrote.
London's Evening Standard newspaper said Ramos would be offered a deal worth ?25 million (US$51 million).
"Sometimes, even though it sounds unheard of, a trainer can receive an irresistible job offer in the middle of the season," Ramos wrote.
Sevilla said on their Web site that Ramos had unilaterally rescinded his contract, presenting documents to this effect to senior team officials at the Sevilla stadium. The club referred to Ramos as "the now former coach of Sevilla."
News reports have identified Ramos as Tottenham's new manager since the English club fired Martin Jol on Thursday.
Ramos, who reportedly was courted by Spurs in August, led Sevilla to consecutive UEFA Cup titles and the qualified the club for its first European Champions League appearance.
Ramos had a contract with Sevilla until next year.
Ramos said he was extremely fond of Sevilla and he understood some of the fans would be angry that he is leaving when the team is doing so well.
"Sometimes life presents you with an opportunity you cannot turn down," he wrote. "Friends, I can assure you that, after a nearly 20-year career it would be unforgivable not to accept a proposal that represents a possibility for a humble person like me, who is now over 50, to grow extraordinarily. It is a professional proposal that is the culmination of much effort and personal sacrifice by me and those around me."

Up next for Panama in tomorrow’s final is to be Mexico, who beat
