Alex Ovechkin flicked in the game's first goal for his 200th NHL point as the Washington Capitals won their home opener 2-0 over the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday.
The Capitals improved to 2-0-0 for the first time since 2002.
Washington controlled the action for long stretches against Carolina (1-1-1), including a 14-2 edge in shots in the first period and a 33-23 advantage overall.

In Uniondale, New York, Mike Comrie scored two goals as the New York Islanders completed a sweep of Buffalo. Comrie found the net at 1:39 into the third to snap a 1-1 tie and give New York a 2-0 start.

In Tampa, Florida, Vinny Prospal and Brad Richards had two goals each to lead Tampa Bay past Atlanta. Prospal scored his second of goal of the game and third this season when he redirected Martin St. Louis' shot to give Tampa Bay a 2-1 lead.

In Toronto, Tomas Kaberle scored in overtime as Toronto rallied to beat Montreal. Alexei Ponikarovsky had two goals and Ian White also scored for the Maple Leafs.

In Pittsburgh, Petr Sykora scored twice and had an assist in his Pittsburgh home debut. Sykora put Pittsburgh up 4-3 by putting in a rebound of Georges Laraque's shot at 13:32 of third.

In Nashville, Tennessee, David Legwand had a three-goal game to help the Nashville open the season 2-0 by beating Dallas. Legwand scored at the 6:37 mark of the first period to open the scoring. He added goals in the second and third periods.
Wild 3, Blue Jackets 2
In St. Paul, Minnesota, Eric Belanger and Brent Burns scored in the third period to rally Minnesota past Columbus to improve to 2-0.
Oilers 5, Flyers 3
In Edmonton, Alberta, Geoff Sanderson scored two goals and Joni Pitkanen added one to lead Edmonton over Philadelphia. Dustin Penner and Steve Staios also scored for Edmonton.

In Chicago, Patrick Kane scored the only goal in the shootout, lifting Chicago over Detroit. Kane beat Dominik Hasek with a backhand shot on the glove side.

In Glendale, Arizona, Patrice Bergeron and Chuck Kobasew scored 38 seconds apart in the first period as Boston held on to beat Phoenix. Marco Sturm added a power-play goal and Tim Thomas made 36 saves for the Bruins, who snapped a seven-game losing streak dating to the end of last season.
