Mongolian grand champion Hakuho fought off a spirited challenge from Kotomitsuki yesterday to move into sole possession of the lead at the Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament.
In the day's final bout at Ryogoku Kokugikan, Hakuho was pushed back to the edge by Kotomitsuki, but threw the ozeki to the dirt at the last minute to improve to 11-2 heading into the final two days.
Kotomitsuki dropped to 8-5.
Hakuho holds a one-win lead over Goeido and fellow Mongolians Ama and Kyokutenho.
In other bouts, ozeki Chiyotaikai spun Goeido around at the faceoff and shoved the 14th-ranked maegashira out to his third loss against 10 wins.
Chiyotaikai improved to 9-4.
Komusubi Ama of Mongolia kept in the title chase when he overpowered fifth-ranked maegashira Toyonoshima to improve to 10-3.
Toyonoshima fell to 7-6.
In an earlier bout, No. 12 maegashira Kyokutenho forced out Takekaze to improve to 10-3. No. 8 Takekaze fell to 8-5.
Bulgarian ozeki Kotooshu was upended by fourth-ranked maegashira Wakanosato to suffer his fifth loss.
Wakanosato, who flipped Kotooshu using an arm-lock maneuver, improved to 5-8.
Top maegashira Homasho defeated sekiwake Aminishiki to improve to 7-6.
