Evander Holyfield's bid to become the first five-time heavyweight champion gained momentum when the 44-year-old fighter stopped Vinny Maddalone in a bloody, one-sided bout on Saturday.
At the urging of Maddalone's trainer, Al Certo, referee Ruben Carrion stopped the fight at 2:48 of the third round, with Maddalone bleeding profusely from the forehead and Holyfield blasting away.
Seconds earlier, with Maddalone against the ropes, the former champ nearly floored his opponent, much to the delight of the partisan crowd of about 6,500 at American Bank Center.
Holyfield, whose comeback unfolds even as his name is associated with a US-wide steroid scandal, entered the fight at 216 pounds (98kg), about 17 pounds lighter than Maddalone. Holyfield improved his record to 41-8-2.
"I'm ready for a title shot now," Holyfield said, conceding he's still probably a couple of matches away from securing one.
Holyfield's co-promoter, Kathy Duva, said his next fight is likely to take place at the end of June, but an opponent hasn't been named.
He barely got a decent workout on Saturday, taking control early and never altering a game plan of jabs and hooks in two, three-and four-punch combinations. The nasty gash on Maddalone's forehead opened when the two butted heads midway through the opening round. Carrion stopped the fight momentarily and had a ringside doctor take a look. Maddalone (27-4) protested, worried the fight would be stopped, but that didn't happen.
From then on, Maddalone was on the defensive, swinging wildly at times, usually missing. Afterward, he refused to blame the loss on the head butt and noted appropriately that Holyfield was "still very, very strong."
Holyfield is again vying for a world title, one he hopes will be unified. But his bid comes less than three years after New York boxing officials revoked his license to fight in that state, citing diminished skills. And his name has been linked to a US-wide investigation of illicit steroid and human growth hormone sales. He insists he's never used any illegal or banned performance-enhancing drugs, a claim he reiterated this week.
Holyfield, ranked 10th among heavyweights in the WBC ratings, began his comeback last year with two wins, both in Texas. He says he has overcome shoulder and back injuries he blames for a three-fight losing streak that appeared to mark the end of his career in November 2004, when he lost an ugly, 12-round decision to journeyman Larry Donald. Soon after, New York officials revoked his license.
But his Texas trio of wins keeps his comeback alive. His ultimate goal is to unify the heavyweight titles, perhaps next year, then retire.
A stunning Lamine Yamal strike on Thursday helped crown Barcelona La Liga champions with a 2-0 win over local rivals RCD Espanyol, with victory ensuring Real Madrid cannot catch them at the top of the table. Yamal’s effort and Fermin Lopez’s goal took Hansi Flick’s side seven points clear of Los Blancos with two matches remaining, to clinch Barcelona’s 28th title and complete a superb domestic treble. Only the UEFA Champions League title escaped an exciting young Barca side this season, as they won the league for the second time in six years, at Espanyol’s ground again just as in 2022-2023. Back then,
SSC Napoli will have to wait one more week to seal the Serie A title after on Sunday being held to a goalless draw at Parma, while closest rivals Inter drew 2-2 in a dramatic game with SS Lazio. Antonio Conte’s team stayed one point ahead of Inter and were unfortunate not to win after twice striking the woodwork through Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa and Matteo Politano, while Scott McTominay also had a free-kick tipped onto the crossbar. The away side thought they would be handed a chance to take the points from the penalty spot in the 96th minute when David Neres
Jannik Sinner on Thursday marched into the semi-finals of the Italian Open after destroying Casper Ruud in straight sets 6-0, 6-1, while Coco Gauff won a marathon three-set battle with China’s Zheng Qinwen to advance to the women’s singles final. American Gauff is to face Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in today’s title match after pulling through 7-6 (7/3), 4-6, 7-6 (7/4) in a match that lasted over three-and-a-half hours. Ruud was supposed to be Sinner’s toughest test in Rome since he came back from his three-month doping ban, as the Norwegian came into the match in hot form on clay after winning in
Shohei Ohtani on Thursday delivered his first two-homer game of the season and had six RBIs as the Los Angeles Dodgers poured it on with five long balls in a 19-2 victory over the visiting Athletics. Max Muncy, Andy Pages and James Outman also hit home runs for the Dodgers, who left no doubt by taking a 13-2 lead following a seven-run third inning. Muncy and Kim Hye-seong each had three hits for Los Angeles. Dodgers right-hander Matt Sauer led off a bullpen game by allowing two runs in four innings. Left-hander Justin Wrobleski (1-1) finished with four scoreless innings after he
