Two goals from Christian Gimenez gave Hertha Berlin a 2-0 victory over Schalke 04 on Sunday to put the Berlin team top of the German Bundesliga for the first time in nearly six years.
The Argentina striker netted from close range in the 39th and 52nd minutes to inflict a first league defeat of the season for Schalke.
Hertha were lying only 10th in the table after Saturday's matches with Schalke second. The victory moves the Berliners onto eight points, level with Nuremberg but with a better goal difference.

It is the first time Hertha have topped the Bundesliga table since Dec. 2, 2000.
Schalke on Saturday suspended their national striker Gerald Asamoah for allegedly announcing to teammates he would cause problems for coach Mirko Slomka if he were not picked for the team.
Slomka said there had been a breach of trust and he was "personally deeply disappointed" with Asamoah, but the 27-year-old player denied in a newspaper interview any wrongdoing.
Eintracht Frankfurt meanwhile came from a goal down to beat Bayer Leverkusen 3-1 for their first league victory of the season following three draws.
Ahmed Madouni opened the scoring for the visitors in the 52nd minute, but Frankfurt levelled three minutes later through Japanese striker Naohiro Takahara.
Michael Thurk put the home side in front in the 70th minute and defender Patrick Ochs made it three six minutes from time.
Along with Hertha Berlin and Nuremberg, who were held 1-1 at home by VfL Bochum on Saturday, Frankfurt remain the only unbeaten side in the league.
Schalke's defeat drops them to sixth in the table, behind three other teams on 7 points including champions Bayern Munich, who were beaten 2-1 at Arminia Bielefeld on Saturday.
A seven-year-old horse had to be euthanized on Friday after breaking its back on the final fence of a Grand National steeplechase race that it won despite sustaining the serious injury. Gold Dancer was competing in the Mildmay Novices’ Chase during Ladies Day at Aintree’s Grand National Festival. The horse managed to cross the finish line approximately four lengths ahead of runner-up Regent’s Stroll. “The winner of our second race of the day, Gold Dancer, was pulled up after

The Daredevils yesterday took eight catches in the final as they eked out a victory in the Taiwan Cricket Triangular Tournament against PCCT at Yingfeng Cricket Ground in Taipei’s Songshan District. PCCT’s batting lineup collapsed after they asked the Daredevils to bowl in the T20 decider of the weekend tournament that also involved the Formosa Cricket Club. PCCT were bundled out for 76 in 16.2 overs against a disciplined Daredevils attack. Ninad Malwade was the top scorer in the innings with 21, but he was among those who offered chances to the fielders. Shane Ferreira and Jason Cameron took three wickets each, with
This year’s Taiwan Athletics Open, which offers Taiwanese athletes an opportunity to compete against their international peers, would be held under a new name after its organizers had earlier announced the event’s cancelation. In a statement issued yesterday, the Chinese Taipei Athletics Association said the competition would still take place on June 6-7 at Banciao Stadium, but under the name “New Taipei City Athletics Open 2026.” The event was given a new name to emphasize its local identity and conform with the international practice of naming World Athletics Tour events after cities, the association said. It said it would soon
