National LeagueThe Washington Nationals held a much-booed Barry Bonds in check, overcame two homers by Ray Durham, and used a five-run third inning of their own against Matt Morris to beat the San Francisco Giants 8-6 on Tuesday night.
Jeered when he stepped into the on-deck circle, when he batted, when he caught fly balls, Bonds went 0-for-4 on the plate and remained at 722 homers, 33 shy of Hank Aaron's record total.
Bonds failed to hit a ball to the outfield in three at-bats against Nationals starter Ramon Ortiz (7-9), as Washington used an exaggerated infield shift. In his last at-bat, against reliever Micah Bowie in the eighth, Bonds made good contact, but left fielder Alfonso Soriano made a running catch.
Ortiz snapped a three-game losing streak with only his second win in his last eight starts. He went six innings, allowing five runs and seven hits -- including Eliezer Alfonzo's solo homer in the fourth, and Durham's two-run shot in the fifth. Durham added his 18th homer of the season, a solo shot off Bowie, in the eighth.
Chad Cordero got out of a jam in the ninth for his 16th save.
Morris (8-8) had won his last five decisions. But he lasted only 2 1-3 innings, giving up seven runs and seven hits.
Cubs 8, Mets 6
At New York, Carlos Zambrano hit his fourth homer of the season and won his eighth straight decision.
Aramis Ramirez homered again and drove in three runs as Zambrano (11-3) and the Cubs beat Tom Glavine (11-4) for the second time in 11 days. Phil Nevin also connected and Henry Blanco hit a three-run double, sending Chicago to its second consecutive victory over the NL East leaders.
Marlins 2, Braves 1
At Atlanta, Cody Ross homered twice and Anibal Sanchez won a matchup of unbeaten rookie pitchers.
Sanchez (4-0) won his third straight start, beating Braves left-hander Chuck James (4-1). Sanchez allowed one run and seven hits in seven innings. He struck out three and didn't walk a batter. Sanchez's streak of 23 consecutive scoreless innings was snapped when Marcus Giles singled in a run in the sixth inning. The right-hander's streak still broke the team rookie record of 19 innings by Dontrelle Willis in June 2003.
Reds 2, Astros 0
At Houston, Aaron Harang outpitched Roger Clemens and dominated the Astros for the third time this season. Harang (11-6) allowed four hits and struck out six with one walk in eight innings. He held the Astros to five hits in victories on April 29 (6-3) and June 2 (14-3).
Pirates 6, Brewers 1
At Milwaukee, Jeromy Burnitz hit a pair of home runs and the Pirates ruined Ben Sheets' strong return from the disabled list. Sheets pitched seven innings, giving up only one run and retiring the final 14 batters in his first appearance in nearly three months. Dave Bush (6-8) relieved him and allowed five runs in the eighth.
Diamondbacks 6, Phillies 5 11 innings
At Philadelphia, Carlos Quentin hit a solo homer in the 11th inning. Quentin hit his third homer of the season leading off against Ryan Franklin (1-5), the seventh Phillies pitcher. The Phillies walked 11 batters and starter Ryan Madson tied a major league record with four wild pitches in one inning.
Cardinals 1, Rockies 0
At Denver, Albert Pujols hit his 33rd homer, Chris Carpenter scattered seven hits over 7 1-3 innings and the Cardinals handed Jason Jennings the first complete-game loss for a Rockies pitcher at home in franchise history.
American League
Kenny Rogers didn't make it out of the first inning when Cleveland scored seven runs and the Indians held off the Detroit Tigers for a 12-7 victory on Tuesday night.
Rogers (11-4) walked three and didn't retire any of the first seven hitters while being roughed up for a season-high seven runs and five hits in his shortest outing in more than 13 years. The left-hander lost for the first time since he was beaten by Cleveland on May 28.
Grady Sizemore and Jason Michaels, the Indians' Nos. 1 and 2 hitters, went a combined 6-for-7 with three walks, four runs and three RBIs.
Casey Blake hit a two-run, inside-the-park homer in the seventh for Cleveland, which nearly squandered a 7-0 lead.
Brandon Inge hit a three-run homer and an RBI double and Curtis Granderson went 4-for-5 as the Tigers clawed back within 8-7 in the fourth, but were shut down on three hits by Jason Davis (3-1), Brian Sikorski and Fausto Carmona over the final five innings.
Devil Rays 6, Angels 3
At St. Petersburg, Florida, Ty Wigginton homered and drove in four runs and the Devil Rays stopped Ervin Santana's seven-game winning streak. Wigginton hit a two-run shot off Santana to tie it at 2 in the sixth. His two-run double off Hector Carrasco during a four-run seventh extended the Devil Rays' lead to 6-2.
Devil Rays reliever Jon Switzer (2-1) retired both batters he faced in the seventh.
Royals 7, Orioles 5
At Kansas City, Missouri, Mark Teahen hit two homers and drove in a career-high five runs to lead the Royals. Angel Berroa went 3-for-3 and Matt Stairs scored three runs for the Royals, who trailed 4-0 after three innings.
Twins 4, White Sox 3
At Chicago, Johan Santana outpitched Jose Contreras, and Jason Bartlett hit a three-run homer as the surging Twins pulled within a game of the slumping White Sox. The Twins have won 33 of their last 41, while the White Sox took their 11th loss in 14 games. Chicago is 7.5 games behind first-place Detroit in the AL Central and the Twins are another game out in third.
Bartlett broke a 1-1 tie when he hits his first homer of the season with one out in the seventh. Chicago's Joe Crede hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning to make it 4-3.
Yankees 7, Rangers 4
At Arlington, Texas, Mike Mussina made it through a sporadic six innings for his 12th victory and Aaron Guiel homered in the second straight game.
Alex Rodriguez showed more signs of breaking out of his slump, reaching base three times (two walks and hit by a pitch) and scoring twice. The third baseman handled four fielding chances without an error, including a couple of short-hoppers.
SS Lazio on Monday fired the far-right sympathizer who handles their eagle mascot after he posted online a series of videos and pictures of his erect penis.
