• Panthers lose 12th consecutive game

  HOCKEY The New Jersey Devils' 5-1 victory left the Florida Panthers just one defeat away from tying the record for the most losses in a row since 1998

  The Florida Panthers lost their 12th consecutive game on Wednesday, shut down again by goalie Martin Brodeur in the New Jersey Devils' 5-1 victory.

  Colin White, Grant Marshall and Brian Gionta scored in a span of 1:33 in the first period for New Jersey, and Alexander Mogilny and Scott Gomez each added a goal in the second. Brodeur made 24 saves, improving to 30-8-7 against the Panthers in his career.

  Roberto Luongo allowed five goals on 19 shots before being pulled for Jamie McLennan at 15:30 of the second.

  At Toronto, Glen Murray scored twice to help Boston end its longest losing streak in eight years with a rout of Toronto.

  The Bruins snapped a six-game slide -- their longest since a seven-game skid in 1997. Darcy Tucker scored for the Maple Leafs, who were booed off the ice.

  Red Wings 7, Avalanche 3

  At Detroit, Mikael Samuelsson had two goals and two assists, leading Detroit over Colorado.

  The Red Wings, who snapped a four-game losing streak, also got a goal and an assist each from Jason Williams, Robert Lang and Dan Cleary. Brendan Shanahan and Johan Franzen also scored, and Pavel Datsyuk added two assists.

  It was Detroit's first game since defenseman Jiri Fischer collapsed on the bench on Monday night in the first period against Nashville.

  He was released from the hospital on Wednesday and was resting at home.

  Sabres 4, Islanders 3, SO

  At Uniondale, New York, Ales Kotalik and Tim Connolly scored in a shootout, giving Buffalo a victory over New York.

  Kotalik tied the score at 3 with 2:49 left in the third period. Chris Drury and Jochen Hecht also scored for the Sabres, 4-1-0-1 in their past six games. Martin Biron stopped 23 shots, one night after Buffalo lost at home to the New York Rangers in a shootout.

  Mike York, Brent Sopel and Jason Blake had goals for the Islanders, beaten for the first time in 62 games when leading after two periods. They were 53-0-8 in their previous 61 games when they had the lead after 40 minutes.

  Lightning 4, Capitals 3, SO

  At Washington, Dan Boyle scored twice and Vaclav Prospal's shootout winner gave Tampa Bay a victory over Washington.

  The victory was the first in four shootouts for the defending Stanley Cup champions. The Lightning overcame a 3-0 deficit to win for the first time in 13 attempts in Washington.

  Prospal was the fifth Lightning player to test goalie Olaf Kolzig in the shootout, won 2-1 by Tampa Bay. Brad Richards also beat Kolzig in the first round. Alexander Ovechkin scored for the Capitals in the shootout, but Lightning goalie John Grahame stopped the next four shooters.

  Washington's Matt Pettinger scored on a second-period penalty shot, then hit the crossbar in overtime.

  Predators 4, Blue Jackets 2

  At Columbus, Ohio, backup goalie Chris Mason made 35 saves to lead Nashville past Columbus, the Blue Jackets' sixth loss in a row.

  David Legwand, Dan Hamhuis, Jeremy Stevenson and Scott Hartnell scored for the Predators, who snapped a five-game road losing skid. Adam Hall had two assists.

  Oilers 4, Wild 3

  At St. Paul, Minnesota, Ethan Moreau scored with 50 seconds of the game remaining and Edmonton beat Minnesota, spoiling Marian Gaborik's return to the lineup.

  Raffi Torres and Jarett Stoll each had a goal and an assist for the Oilers, who have won four of five. Mike Morrison stopped 22 shots to improve to 3-0-0.

  Gaborik had a goal and an assist, and Pascal Dupuis scored his first two goals of the season and added an assist for the Wild, who have lost four of five. Dwayne Roloson made 24 saves.

  Stars 3, Mighty Ducks 1

  At Dallas, Jason Arnott scored twice in the third period and Dallas defeated Anaheim for its third victory in 11 days over the Mighty Ducks.

  Brenden Morrow also had a goal for the Stars, who extended their winning streak to five games. Bill Guerin assisted on all three Dallas goals and Marty Turco made 20 saves. Teemu Selanne scored for Anaheim, which lost for the ninth time in 10 games.

  The only victory during that stretch came in Phoenix on Tuesday night.

  Flames 3, Sharks 2

  At Calgary, Alberta, Robyn Regehr scored the go-ahead goal on a harmless-looking wrist shot in the third period, and Calgary sent San Jose to its seventh consecutive loss.

  Roman Hamrlik and Tony Amonte also scored for Calgary, which has won 10 of 11.

  The Flames tied Vancouver for the top spot in the Northwest Division with 30 points.

  The Sharks got goals from Tom Preissing and Grant Stevenson, who made his NHL debut. Stevenson is the grandson of Hall of Fame goalie Glenn Hall, who was in attendance.
