AC Milan and Chelsea have the edge heading into the second leg of the Champions League quarterfinals this week, while security issues threaten to overshadow Liverpool's match at Juventus.
Milan leads city rival Inter Milan 2-0 before today's match, while Chelsea goes to Bayern Munich after a 4-2 win at Stamford Bridge.
Liverpool beat Juventus 2-1 in their first-leg match, which honored the 39 fans who were killed in rioting at the 1985 European Cup final between the teams in Brussels, Belgium. Security has been tightened in Turin for tomorrow's return leg.
In tomorrow's other match, PSV Eindhoven hosts Lyon after a 1-1 draw.
Both Milan teams rested key players in Serie A games over the weekend. Milan had a 1-1 draw with struggling Brescia, while Inter beat Bologna 1-0.
Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti said he expected his side to flag during the league match because players "had not yet recovered physically and psychologically from Wednesday's derby."
"Against Inter, my team will be faster and more attentive, the true Milan in other words," Ancelotti said.
Milan captain Paolo Maldini missed the Brescia game with a minor leg injury but is expected to start today.
Inter coach Roberto Mancini said the 2-0 gap would be difficult to overcome.
"But we have nothing to lose and must try to score three," Mancini said. "Our pride will be a key. Soccer is open to sensational comebacks and I'm confident we can do it. We must believe we can do it."
Mancini was expected to start Obafemi Martins and Brazil striker Adriano, who has returned from a knee injury, up front.
Inter was eliminated by Milan on away goals in the 2003 Champions League semifinals. AC Milan went on to beat Juventus on penalties for its sixth European title.
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is still on track to win the Blues' first European title.
Mourinho, who won the Champions League last season with FC Porto, watched the Blues' 4-2 win over Bayern on television last week as he served the first of his two-match ban for bringing the game into disrepute.
In Saturday's Premier League game, he was back on the bench and watched as Chelsea nearly fell to its first home defeat of the season. Didier Drogba scored an 82nd-minute equalizer to salvage a 1-1 draw with Birmingham.
Mourinho dismissed rumors of unrest in the club following his reported unhappiness at the club's decision not to appeal UEFA's ban.
"We have a trophy, we are top of the league by 11 points and we are in the quarterfinals of the Champions League and won the first game, we could not be better. I am happy," Mourinho said.
Chelsea won League Cup with a 3-2 win over Liverpool on Feb. 27.
Mourinho will be missing again from the touchline at Munich's Olympiastadion, where Bayern is hoping to shore up its defense.
"We're making preparations that assume we will still be in the Champions League after Tuesday," Bayern coach Felix Magath said.
Defender Martin Demichelis returns from injury, as does Roy Makaay and forward Claudio Pizzaro. Creative midfielder Mehmet Scholl may make a second-half appearance.
On Wednesday, security will be in the spotlight in Turin.
It will be the second time the two clubs met since the Heysel Stadium disaster on May 29, 1985.
A seven-year-old horse had to be euthanized on Friday after breaking its back on the final fence of a Grand National steeplechase race that it won despite sustaining the serious injury. It follows the death of four horses at the Cheltenham Festival last month — including one after the prestigious Gold Cup. Gold Dancer was competing in the Mildmay Novices’ Chase during Ladies Day at Aintree’s Grand National Festival. The horse managed to cross the finish line approximately four lengths ahead of runner-up Regent’s Stroll. “The winner of our second race of the day, Gold Dancer, was pulled up after
“I don’t remember the moment, but ever since I was a kid, that’s the first thing I loved,” two-time NBA All-Star Isaiah Thomas said of his lifelong romance with basketball. However, that journey unfolded against the limitations of his size in a game where height often dictates opportunity — a reality he confronted throughout his career. At 175cm, Thomas is less than 2cm taller than the average Taiwanese adult male, while NBA players during his career stood at about 200cm on average. Compared with the NBA’s average career length of less than five years, Thomas’ 13-season career stands out as
Hans Niemann declares he would become a “stone cold killer” in a Netflix documentary released on Tuesday about his feud with five-time classical world champion Magnus Carlsen, a pledge that injects new edge into the lingering fallout from the cheating scandal that shook elite chess. “I’m gonna be a stone cold killer the rest of my life,” the US’ Niemann says in the film. “I’m going to become the best player in the world, and no one is going to believe that now, but this clip will play over and over again in 10 years — just wait.” “I just
Dakar and Rabat have longstanding ties, but relations have been strained since the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final, which Senegal won in mid-January before being stripped of the title, which was transferred to Morocco. Now, the AFCON trophy is something of a thorn in the two countries’ sides. On Rue Mohamed V, the street where Moroccan vendors are based in the Senegalese capital, a police van is parked. “The police have been on high alert since the Confederation of African Football [CAF] decided to award the title to Morocco, but there have been no incidents,” a local resident said.
