Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly has told his lineup to forget the recent split test series and last year's World Cup final loss to Australia and focus only on the limited-overs tri-series starting today.
Australia and India meet in a day-night clash at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in the tournament opener just three days after their four-test series ended level at 1-1.
World champion Australia follows that with a day-nighter against Zimbabwe at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Sunday before India and Zimbabwe go head-to-head in Hobart.
"We were beaten by [Australia] in the World Cup, we lost to them in the triangular [series] at home last year. But that is past and we need to carry on the good work of the test series," Ganguly was quoted saying.
Rahul Dravid, voted player of the test series against Australia after scoring 619 runs at an average above 123, will fill the role of wicketkeeper in the limited-overs game with test 'keeper Parthiv Patel expected to miss out on the starting 11.
Virender Sehwag would open the batting with Sachin Tendulkar, Ganguly confirmed, ending speculation that he might promote himself in the order.
Ganguly said all 15 players would be in contention during the series, including Rohan Gavaskar, son of Indian great Sunil Gavaskar, who was added to the squad when Mohammad Kaif was sidelined.
The Australian squad traveled from Sydney to Melbourne without Ricky Ponting on Wednesday after the skipper succumbed to an illness the previous night celebrating Stephen Waugh's last test for Australia.
Ponting arrived in Melbourne on the eve of the tournament opener and said he was certain to be fit, although fast bowler Nathan Bracken was sidelined for the first four matches with a hip strain. Brad Williams was the likely replacement for Australia.
The Australians were undefeated at the World Cup in South Africa last March and dominated a tri-series in India in November, culminating in four consecutive wins over the Indians.
Brett Lee, who took 22 wickets in the last World Cup to finish second in the bowling standings, was sidelined for the limited-overs series in India and returned for the test matches at home, but struggled to take wickets.
American rugby sevens star Ilona Maher is to join 15-a-side club Bristol next month in a bid to play in next year’s Women’s Rugby World Cup, the English club announced on Monday. Maher, 28, helped the US to a bronze medal at this summer’s Olympic Games in Paris and is the seven-a-side sport’s most popular player on social media. “This is a huge coup to be able to bring Ilona Maher to Bristol Bears on a short-term deal,” Bristol head coach Dave Ward said. “She is one of the biggest names in women’s sport, let alone rugby, and we believe she will

LeBron James is in quite the shooting slump — especially from long distance, highlighted by his zero-for-four effort from three-point range for the Los Angeles Lakers in their 109-80 loss against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday. That return stretched the nearly-40-year-old’s skid to zero-for-19 from deep over his past four games. James’ birthday is on Dec. 30. After going four-for-16 from the floor overall with six of his team’s 20 turnovers for a season-low 10 points against the Timberwolves, James was asked to reflect on the Lakers reaching the quarter mark of their 2024-2025 schedule under rookie coach J.J. Redick at 12-9. “I
