Nick Faldo is planning to throw himself into the food business with plans for a chain of "Jug and Jacket" theme restaurants that could be serving their first customers as early as next year.
The Englishman, owner of three British Open claret jugs and just as many green jackets from the Masters, revealed the plan to expand his thriving off-course business activities while competing at Ta Shee.
Faldo already runs a highly successful golf course design company. One of the reasons he is competing here is that it fitted in with visits next week to courses in Beijing and South Korea.
He is also due to attend corporate outings in Kuala Lumpur and visit Tokyo, where he is due to officially launch his new tee.
Faldo said he had registered the "Jug and Jacket" name as his own copyright several years ago but it was only recently that he had begun steps to turn the idea into reality.
"It's a franchise idea I thought of that conjures up an English pub theme, so I registered the name a few years ago," he said.
"Everyone I spoken to have shown enormous interest and though we have to get it to fruition, it's a fun idea.
"I have my own visions of the style I want but it will have to be a subtle golf theme and not caked in memorabilia.
"I would like my memorabilia displayed differently but it will probably be by the end of next year before the first one opens.
"It will all depend where it gets off the ground first whether it's in England, Europe or America."
If successful, Faldo will join former golfing arch rival Greg Norman, plus the likes of Darren Clarke and Ryder Cup captain Sam Torrance who have ventured into the restaurant business.
Teeing off
Players begin teeing off at 6:40am today with the final group of Miguel Angel Jimenez, Carl Pettersson and Thomas Levet starting at 11:05am.
Not Sweet 16
The par-four 16th hole is proving to be one of the most challenging holes on the course, with its large pond in front of the green gobbling up balls.
An unlucky bounce on the hole cost Thomas Levet a share of the lead yesterday. His drive struck the cart path twice on its way to finding a watery grave.
The hole has intimidated at least Hsieh Yu-shu (
"When I got to 16 I was a little bit scared because I had a nine during the first round," said Hsieh, who shot a round of 79 Thursday. "So, today played I played it a little bit conservatively."
RECORD DEFEAT: The Shanghai-based ‘Oriental Sports Daily’ said the drubbing was so disastrous, and taste so bitter, that all that is left is ‘numbness’ Chinese soccer fans and media rounded on the national team yesterday after they experienced fresh humiliation in a 7-0 thrashing to rivals Japan in their opening Group C match in the third phase of Asian qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. Chinese President Xi Jinping once said he wanted China to host and even win the World Cup one day, but that ambition looked further away than ever after a
