Twenty inmates are to be honored Tuesday by Minister of Justice Chen Ding-nan (陳定南) for passing the Joint University Entrance Examination and gaining admittance to universities.
A total of 25 prisoners took the tests this year with 20 making passing grades. All but one of them have been paroled to begin their studies.
The one whose application for parole was turned down by a parole board last week, better known as the "Hwakang Wolf," had been accepted by the department of sociology at National Taiwan University (NTU).
But his success in the entrance examination drew public attention to his criminal record -- convictions on 20 counts of rape and other sex offenses -- and public outcry. The parole board under the Ministry of Justice decided to keep the man behind bars to quell the controversy.
However, another prisoner, who was involved in a high-profile robbery of a well-known TV actress in 1990 and was also admitted by the NTU department of sociology, will walk free on parole this autumn.
