He said he hopes that the US government will shift its China policy in this direction. As for Beijing's reaction, he pointed out that as a matter of fact, the Clinton administration had already ceased its policy of "strategic ambiguity" when it sent two US Navy carrier battle groups to the Taiwan Strait in March 1996 when the Chinese People's Liberation Army held live missile tests just off Taiwan.

Feldman noted that the Bush administration's hefty arms sales package to Taiwan this year reflects the important fact that "the US has resumed its military ties with Taiwan."
The facts demonstrate that Chen knows how to deal with the communist Chinese, Feldman said, adding that Taiwan's opposition parties, who have claimed that they can better handle relations with Beijing, are taking the wrong approach by "conceding" Taiwan's stance toward Beijing.
