The Washington-based National Press Club (NPC) has reportedly invited former president Lee Teng-hui (
"They said they sent the invitation by fax last week, but perhaps due to the carelessness of my colleagues, we did not get it," Lee Ching-yi (
Lee Ching-yi said given that the fax had not reached Lee yet, it was premature for the office to announce whether he would accept the invitation.
A local newspaper reported yesterday that the press club issued Lee the invitation on May 1. The report also said if Lee accepted the invitation, he might become a press club luncheon speaker. Many world leaders have spoken at the club's famous luncheons over the years.
Lee had originally planned to travel to the US on April 30 and attend a ceremony on May 3 at his alma mater, Cornell University, to establish the Lee Teng-hui Institute for Scientific Research. But after having an operation in Japan in late April to treat clogged arteries Lee decided to postpone his trip.
The press club's history goes back more than 90 years. Its regular weekly luncheons for speakers began in 1932.
An average of 70 luncheons each year provide a significant forum for presidents, prime ministers, business and cultural leaders, and members of the Cabinet and Congress to express their views.
One of the largest events ever staged at the club was a mammoth 1959 press conference by then-Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev. Winston Churchill, Madame Chiang Kai-shek (
Madame Chiang gave a talk at a club luncheon back in 1965.
