The director of Taipei's Bureau of Cultural Affairs yesterday used the opening of an art exhibition and a series of culture study camps to encourage children in their appreciation of art.
"We encourage children as young as four or five years old to visit art galleries and museums as often as possible and participate in art-related activities," said the director of Taipei's Bureau of Cultural Affairs (
"By attending such events frequently, children get to learn how to see and feel the world from a different perspective."
Lung was speaking at the first of a series of culture study camps organized in coordination with the second biennial art exhibition entitled, "2000 Taipei biennial -- the sky is the limit" (台北雙年展無法無天).
The exhibition includes displays dealing with issues like cultural diversity and will run though Jan. 7.
Artists from 19 countries will present pieces in both contemporary and avant-garde styles.
Echoing the theme of the exhibition, "the sky is the limit," the venue is arranged in such a creative way that it seems like a big playground for both children and adults.
Danny Amir of Israel, who came to the museum for the first time with his wife Yael and son, Matan, said he is not worried that his two-year-old son is too young to understand contemporary art.
"Art is not something that requires age to understand. It's something you enjoy," he said. "We'll do whatever it takes to expose him to art, and it's important to start when he's young."
