One in three children living in an urban area has thought about running away from home, according to a recently conducted opinion poll.
The Family Index Survey of Millennium Taiwanese Children (
The poll randomly selected 3,116 samples from fifth and sixth graders of 51 elementary schools from Taipei City, Taipei County, Taichung City, Taichung County, Ksohsiung City and Kaohsiung County. These six cities and counties are the most densely populated areas of Taiwan.
The results indicated that 33 percent of respondents have thought before about the possibility of running away from home, while 44 percent believed no one in their family cared about them, and 34 percent said they often or occasionally stayed at home alone for long periods after school while their parents were working.
The poll also showed 48 percent of the respondents felt no one really wanted to listen to them, while 70 percent said they did not want to share their secrets with their parents.
Worse still, a total of 26 percent said they had been beaten and abused by their parents, and 75 percent said they felt extremely pressured by high parental expectations.
About 59 percent said they hoped their parents would spend more leisure time with them engaged in outdoor activities, but 77.89 percent said their parents actually spend most of their time together watching TV.
Overall, the welfare foundation said the poll showed that children were not lacking in provision for their materialistic needs, but that they craved a greater sense of spritual guidance from their parents. Also, even though parents were generally at home, they needed to spend more time engaged in conversation with their kids.
