Following comments made in a televised presidential forum on Saturday evening, the general office of the Academia Sinica released a statement refuting accusations of hypocrisy made during the forum against its president, Lee Yuan-tseh (李遠哲), by New Party presidential candidate Li Ao (李敖).
The statement referred to Li Ao's accusations as being "totally groundless" and that they were intended to "confuse the public."

The statement also dismissed Li's suggestions that the status of the National Alliance for Post-earthquake Reconstruction (全盟), of which Lee is chairman, had been influenced by Lee's position. Li also claimed that a non-governmental organization such as the National Alliance needed to register with the Ministry of the Interior.
Asked yesterday about his reaction to the criticism from the New Party candidate, Lee said it was not worthwhile for him to comment as the official Academia Sinica statement had spoken for him and clarified any "false notions."
