The Judicial Yuan has invited division chiefs from both trial and appeal courts to a meeting to discuss the possibility of contracting private companies to handle the auctioning of foreclosed property in settled civil lawsuits.
The number of civil lawsuits sitting at courts has been increasing rapidly and currently stands at more than one million nationwide.
The increase in civil lawsuits has been due in part to the sluggish economy, which has triggered bad loans and lowered the success rate for auctions of foreclosed property.
Manpower shortages at the courts have also aggravated the situation.
Last year, the Judicial Yuan hired more than 200 students to work as part-time staff to help the courts reduce the backlog of lawsuits. However, the move has had little effect on the problem.

As of 8pm yesterday, the storm was 670km southeast of Oluanpi (鵝鑾鼻) and traveling northwest at 12kph to 16kph.
