The announcement was made during Ma's inspection tour of the 7.7km section of the new line that goes underground through nine stations -- Taipei City Hall, Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall (
Ma said he believes the line will bring new life to the old communities in the western part of the city.
MRT officials estimated that the new line, which links the Mucha line (?鴐]線), Tamshui line (2H?蘀u), Chungho line (??和線) and Hsintien line (新店線), will increase the total number of commuters from about 400,000 a day to 600,000.
The officials said it takes 9.5 minutes to go from the Taipei City Hall to Taipei Main Station and another 4.5 minutes to Lungshan Temple. The train service runs at an interval of six minutes.
As to ticket prices, it costs NT$20 to go from Taipei City Hall to Taipei Main Station by MRT and NT$25 to Lungshan Temple. Other ticket prices include NT$35 from City Hall to Nanshihchiao (
Relevant celebration activities will be held at Lungshan Temple and Taipei City Hall stations starting at 9am on the day the line opens. The city government welcomes Taipei residents to participate in the opening ceremony.
