The Department of Health (DOH) yesterday denied local media reports of a possible typhoid fever epidemic in the quake stricken area of Nantou County.
An 85-year-old tuberculosis patient from Jenai township died on Oct. 1 after a bout of severe diarrhea, raising fears of a typhus outbreak.
The man's death followed several cases involving dysentery-like conditions reported among earthquake victims in Jenai Township.
Local media reports said yesterday that the man might have died from paratyphoid fever.
The man was hospitalized at the Puli Christian Hospital on Sept. 19 after catching pneumonia.
He was transferred to an affiliate hospital of the China Medical College on Sept. 23 and began to suffer from severe diarrhea the next day.
Officials from the department's Center for Disease Control are conducting tests to determine if the man died from paratyphoid fever, according to local media reports.
But a DOH statement quelled press claims of a typhoid epidemic, though some bureau officials expressed concern about a possible outbreak in areas severely damaged by the quake, given the poor sanitary conditions.

One person was killed and another seven injured today when a tourist shuttle bus plunged 30m to 40m down a ravine in Nantou County, the Tourism Administration said.
