When it comes to movies, some people delight in watching spine-chilling horror films. Surprisingly, apart from containing a few scares, horror movies may also offer an unexpected __1__. According to a study, watching 90 minutes of a scary movie can burn an average of 113 calories, which is roughly __2__ to taking a 30-minute walk.
Researchers from the University of Westminster carried out an experiment in which they __3__ participants’ oxygen intake, carbon dioxide output, and heart rates while they were watching horror movies without any distractions. The results revealed that physiological responses to fear play a crucial role in calorie burn. When people are faced with frightening __4__, the body’s fight-or-flight response comes into play. In this state, their pulse quickens, their blood __5__ faster around the body, and their body releases adrenaline. This rush of adrenaline reduces one’s appetite, increases metabolism, and burns more calories.
The research even __6__ the horror films based on the number of calories burned during the experiment. The Shining topped the list at an impressive 184 calories, followed by Jaws at 161 calories, and The Exorcist at 158 calories.

Dogs’ noses are incredibly keen. They can even detect changes in cortisol levels in human sweat and breath. Known as the “stress hormone,” cortisol increases when humans are under pressure. Recent research indicates that the smell of human stress can influence a dog’s behavior and emotions. In the study, human volunteers were exposed to the stressful tasks of preparing and delivering a speech on the spot and then solving math problems. __1__ Researchers collected sweat and breath samples from the volunteers on pieces of cloth during both their stressful and restful states.
