December means Christmas is right around the corner for many people. This involves going to church for some. For others, it is about shopping for presents for friends and family. And for still others, it is a time for winter activities like skiing and sledding. Whichever way you celebrate the holiday, you are sure to hear lots of Christmas idioms.
“A white Christmas”
The idea of a white Christmas is in reference to a Christmas Day when there is snow on the ground or it is actually snowing. Of course, this is only possible in climates that get cold enough for there to be snow. Yet, the idea of a snowy Christmas with a snowman in the yard is one of the more ubiquitous images of the holiday, no matter where you live.

Even if you’ve never experienced snow in December, you’ve probably heard the song “White Christmas.” Penned by Irving Berlin and sung by Bing Crosby in the 1940s, the song alludes to “dreaming of a white Christmas” with horse-drawn carriages and sleigh bells in the snow. This classic tune has been covered by dozens of artists over the years and is found on the soundtrack of numerous Christmas movies spreading the idea that the ideal Christmas is one that involves snow.
“Christmas came early this year”
Christmas Day always falls on Dec. 25, so the idea that “Christmas came early” isn’t an indication that the holiday moved up on the calendar. Instead, the phrase is used to talk about something good that unexpectedly happened. Christmas morning is often a time when people wake up to find gifts under the Christmas tree, which is always a happy time. So, when a happy surprise, like an awesome gift or a magical experience, happens before Christmas, it is like an unexpected Christmas morning.

Donburi, often simply called don, is a beloved Japanese dish that consists of a bowl of steamed rice topped with various other ingredients. The word donburi itself actually means “bowl” in Japanese, but it has come to represent much more than just a vessel. Donburi first emerged during the Edo period (1603–1867) as a quick and convenient meal for busy city dwellers. By the 19th century, donburi had become immensely popular among theater enthusiasts, who often purchased these portable meals to enjoy during long performances.
