As the nation experiences the first domestic case of COVID-19 since April and the epidemic prevention level is raised once again, Taiwanese need to protect themselves with masks and hand sanitizer at all times. One mask manufacturer is promoting a themed set of “protective sacred mountain” masks featuring 10 of the nation’s famed baiyue, or 100 peaks, including Jade Mountain, Snow Mountain and Mount Nanhu. The masks have so far been a roaring success, with the company selling 100,000 masks on the first day.
Acenature Biotechnology Co managing director Lai Ming-yi says that masks are protecting Taiwan like sacred Jade Mountain protects the nation, and by wearing a mask with the mountain’s image, the wearer can symbolize hope for the future and continue to shepherd the nation toward successfully combating the virus.
Lai says that the COVID-19 pandemic has stirred up a tempest in many countries around the globe, but Taiwan, thanks to its early adoption of mask wearing, is leading the world in epidemic prevention policy. As a result of its pre-emptive actions, Taiwan has fortunately only experienced a few raindrops, while other countries have had to battle a raging storm, Lai says. Lai compares the COVID-19 pandemic to a super typhoon making landfall: the Central Mountain Range shields western Taiwan, reducing the number of casualties and damage, Lai explains. “Sometimes the sun even shines over the mountain range during a typhoon; this is why I wanted to create a special Jade Mountain-themed mask design to commemorate the nation’s sacred mountain in this year of the pandemic,” Lai says.

Conquering Taiwan’s 100 peaks has become an extremely popular pastime, while domestic tourism is also really popular during the pandemic, Lai says. Many people have begun to develop an intimate relationship with Taiwan’s mountains and forests, and even take on the 100 peak challenge. Lai decided to let the public “conquer” Taiwan’s 100 peaks “in the blink of an eye” by creating a special set of hand-drawn masks under the company’s Acenature brand. In addition to Jade Mountain, Snow Mountain and Mount Nanhu, the collection also includes Mount Chilai, the Wuling Four Peaks, the Jhongheng Four Peaks, Mount Dabajian, Jiaming Lake, Mount Hehuan and the Nanheng Three Peaks.
