On August 13, the Taipei Astronomical Museum (TAM) will hold a talk on cosmic phenomena that can be observed next year with a computer simulation of celestial events such as meteor showers and partial lunar eclipses. There are expected to be three meteor showers next year, the first one being at the beginning of the year. While the Quadrantids meteor shower is expected to occur on January 3, the Perseids meteor shower will occur on August 13, and the Geminids on December 14. All outbursts are expected have over a hundred meteors and can be easily observed with the naked eye, as long as there is no light pollution.
According to the TAM, next year will see several solar and lunar eclipses, but only the partial lunar eclipse occurring from August 7 to August 8 will be visible from Taiwan. During the eclipse, a quarter of the moon will be obscured by the Earth, a sight that is rarely seen and will surely impress stargazers. A total solar eclipse which can only be observed from the US will occur on August 21.
The TAM talk is scheduled for 4pm on August 13. In addition to giving a summary on next year’s major celestial events at the museum’s Dome Theater, it will also take visitors to its observatory, where visitors will get a chance to view stars through a large astronomical telescope. The talk is free, but seats are limited to 200 people.

北市天文館八月十三日舉辦「宇宙紀事」講座，動態模擬明年一系列星象活動，包括流星雨、月偏食等。明年預計共有三次流星雨，首次流星雨在一年之初就能見到。明年一月三日有象限儀座流星雨、八月十三日有英仙座流星雨、十二月十四日則有雙子座流星雨，每小時天頂數量都超過一百顆，且觀測條件都相當好，只要沒有光害，多能肉眼看見。
天文館表示，明年共有好幾次日月食，台灣只能看見八月七日至八月八日的月偏食，由於月亮有四分之一隱沒在地球影內，相當罕見，值得一觀；八月二十一日的日全食則在美國能看到。
八月十三日的講座下午4點開始，除了將在宇宙劇場的模擬星空下為遊客簡介明年重要天象外，也會帶領遊客到觀測室用大型專業天文望遠鏡實地觀測，名額兩百人，費用全免。(自由時報記者梁珮綺)
