In Japan, the Office Chair Grand Prix has been all the rage for the last seven years. This year, some shops along Jhengsing Street and Tainan City Government have joined forces to bring the race to Tainan City. On April 24, on the section of Haian Road between Jhengsing Street and Jhongjheng Road, Tainan Mayor William Lai fired the starting gun. The competitors suddenly skidded forward and moved along by contorting their bodies into all manner of strange postures, accompanied to the sound of non-stop laughter from spectators.
Lai says the office chair sliding race originates from Kyoto in Japan and for the race’s international debut, it has been brought to Tainan, “the Kyoto of Taiwan.” Tainan residents are honoured the race is being held in their city, says Lai, and are thankful to Japan for the assistance received following the recent earthquake in Tainan. When the decision was made to hold the race in Tainan, Japan’s Kumamoto Prefecture experienced a major earthquake, causing a serious disaster and inflicting heavy casualties. Tainan residents send their heartfelt condolences and hope reconstruction and recovery will be swift.
Competitors came dressed up as many different kinds of cartoon characters or as interesting designs. Some, after setting off, slid at break-neck speed to the finishing line, while others toppled over in their chairs onto the ground and even skidded the wheels off their chairs. Several competitors grazed themselves after falling over and had their wounds dressed at an on-the-spot first-aid station. Another two competitors felt dizzy having suffered heat stroke and were taken to the hospital for treatment. There were, however, no serious injuries.

When people listen to music today, they typically use streaming services like YouTube or Spotify. However, traditional formats like vinyl records have regained popularity in recent times. Vinyl records are circular discs that store music in grooves on their surfaces and are played on a turntable. As the turntable’s needle runs along these grooves, it picks up vibrations and translates them into sound. The history of vinyl records dates back to the late 1800s, but material and technological challenges delayed mass production until the 1950s. Despite early versions having short playtimes and poor sound quality, vinyl records introduced a new era

Picture a 45-foot-long animal with a 5-foot-long skull and 3-foot-long arms. It may not seem strange until you realize that a human with those proportions would be 6 feet tall with 5-inch arms. Although the Tyrannosaurus rex went extinct 65 million years ago, the mystery of its unusual body __1__ has fascinated scientists for over a century. Barnum Brown, the paleontologist who first discovered T. rex fossils, initially found it hard to believe that the tiny arms belonged to such a __2__ creature. One of his colleagues speculated that the short forelimbs might have been used to hold the
A: Actually, Brazilian jiu-jitsu is particularly good for small people like you. B: Really? How so? A: According to Diana Wang, a US doctor of physical therapy, the BJJ’s purpose is to help smaller, weaker people defend themselves by using various techniques, such as leverage. B: That sounds interesting. What time does Dr Wang’s BJJ seminar begin tonight? A: The event is scheduled for 7:30pm at PMA Brazilian Jiu-jitsu in Taipei. Admission is free, but donations are welcome.
